You create bundles on Shopify in one of three ways. The free Shopify Bundles app makes fixed bundles and multipacks. Native discounts handle buy X get Y deals. A bundle app adds quantity breaks, mix and match and build-your-own bundles to the product page.
This guide walks through each method, step by step, then covers the checks to run before your customers see the offer. If you are still deciding which bundle type to sell or how deep the discount should be, start with our product bundles guide.
Which method should you use to create a bundle?
Match the method to the bundle type. Each tool covers some types and not others.
| Bundle you want | Method | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed set of different products | Shopify Bundles app, or a bundle app | Free |
| Multipack of one product | Shopify Bundles app | Free |
| Buy X get Y (BOGO) in the cart | Native Shopify discount | Included in Shopify |
| BOGO shown on the product page | Bundle app | Depends on the app |
| Quantity breaks (Single, Duo, Trio) | Bundle app | Depends on the app |
| Mix and match | Bundle app, or the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus | Depends on the app |
| Build-your-own bundle | Bundle app | Depends on the app |
A rule of thumb: if one fixed set covers what you need, start with Shopify Bundles. Add an app when shoppers should choose quantities or products right on the product page.
How do you create a fixed bundle with the Shopify Bundles app?
Shopify Bundles is Shopify’s own app. Shopify says it is free and available on all plans (Shopify Help Center). Install it from the Shopify App Store, then follow these steps:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Bundles.
- Click Create bundle.
- Enter a name in the Title field.
- Click Select products, tick the products for the bundle, then click Select.
- Optional: change each product’s quantity, select or deselect variants, or tick Combine options with matching names.
- Click Save and continue.
- On the product details page, add the product details, such as a description and images, and check the bundle price.
- In the Status section, choose Active. Under Publishing, check the sales channels.
- Click Save.
Step 8 matters. A new bundle starts as a draft, so it stays hidden until you set it to Active.
How do you make a multipack?
A multipack is several units of one product sold as one item, such as a 3-pack of socks. In step 5 above, click the menu icon next to the product and choose Duplicate product. Repeat for each extra unit, then continue with the same steps.
What limits should you know about?
Shopify lists these for the Bundles app and for product bundles in general (Shopify Help Center):
- Size: up to 30 components, up to 2,000 units per component, and a maximum of 3 options and 100 variants per bundle.
- Checkout: your store needs the upgraded checkout. Stores with checkout.liquid customizations can’t use product bundles.
- Channels: bundles work on the Online Store or a custom storefront.
- Purchase options: bundles aren’t compatible with subscriptions, pre-orders or try-before-you-buy.
- Prices: if a component’s price changes, the bundle price does not update. You change it by hand.
- SKUs: the bundle has its own SKU. If a component’s SKU changes, you delete and recreate the bundle.
- Stock: the component with the lowest stock decides how many bundles you can sell.
- Other limits: bundles can’t contain other bundles, can’t be used in exchanges, and don’t support import, export or bulk editing.
How do you create a buy X get Y deal without an app?
Use a native discount. It works in the cart and at checkout (Shopify Help Center):
- Go to Discounts and click Create discount.
- Choose Buy X get Y.
- Under Method, choose Discount code or Automatic discount.
- Enter the name or code, then fill in Customer buys and Customer gets.
- Set Eligibility, any usage limits, Combinations and Active dates.
- Click Save.
There is one catch. Shopify says “the free or discounted ‘get’ item is never automatically added to the cart”. The customer has to add it, so say so on the product page. Also, nothing on the product page shows the deal unless you add a banner or text yourself.
How do you create bundles with a bundle app?
A bundle app shows the offer on the product page and applies the discount for you. Here is the setup with Sam Bundles, our bundle app. It is free on the Shopify App Store and has five offer types. Other apps follow similar steps.
Step 1: Install the app and turn on the app embed
Install Sam Bundles and open it. In the Setup guide, open Enable app embed and click Active app embed. The theme editor opens. Switch on Sam Bundles under App embeds and click Save.
Back in the app, App status should show Active. Until it does, no offer appears on your store. The install guide shows each screen.
Step 2: Pick a template
On the app home, scroll to Offers and click Create new offer. Pick a Brand color, then click Choose on a template:
- Quantity breaks for the same product
- Buy X, get Y (BXGY) deal
- Quantity breaks with a free gift
- Under Other bundle types: Mix & Match, Bundle Builder and Product Fixed Bundle
The editor opens with a ready-made offer you can change. See create an offer.
Step 3: Set up the offer
What you fill in depends on the type:
| Offer | What you set | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity breaks | Products (all, selected products or collections), then bars with a quantity and a price: full price, percentage off, amount off or fixed price | Quantity breaks |
| Buy X, get Y | How many the customer buys and at what price, how many they get and the discount. 100% off makes them free | Buy X, get Y |
| Mix and match | Bundle options, each with the products shoppers pick from, and a percentage or amount off | Mix and match |
| Bundle builder | The products shoppers can add, and tiers such as “buy at least 3” | Bundle builder |
| Fixed bundle | Up to 30 products, then a percentage or amount off, or your own bundle price | Fixed bundle |
For quantity breaks, the Settings card also holds the Discount name shown in the cart and at checkout. Pick something clear, such as “Duo discount”.
Step 4: Set schedule, placement and discount rules
Every offer editor has the same cards below the main settings (offer settings guide):
- Schedule: a start date and time, plus an optional end date so a sale stops on its own.
- Placement: for mix and match, bundle builder and fixed bundles, show the bundle on the pages of the included products, and choose where shoppers go after Add to cart: the current page, the cart or checkout.
- Advanced: tick which Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts the offer can combine with, and choose who can use it: all customers, logged-in customers, guests or customers with certain tags.
Step 5: Save to publish
New offers show Unpublished until you click Save. After that, the button at the top switches between Publish and Unpublish. You can also turn an offer on or off with its toggle in the Offers list.
The widget appears next to the product form on its own. To place it elsewhere, add the Volume Discount, Mix & Match, Bundle Builder or Fixed Bundle block in the theme editor.
How do bundle discounts reach the cart and checkout?
It helps to know this before you test. With the Shopify Bundles app, Shopify says discounts can come from a discount code, a bundle price you set, or a Cart Transform for customized bundles. For product or collection discounts, include the parent bundle product. Selecting only the components won’t apply the discount.
With Sam Bundles, customers don’t enter a code. Quantity breaks and BOGO run as an automatic Shopify discount under the discount name you set. Bundle builder, fixed bundle and mix and match offers go through Shopify’s Cart Transform, which splits the bundle into its products at their bundle prices. Your order shows each item as its own line, so your team picks and packs what they see.
What should you check before you launch a bundle?
Run through this list on a test order before you promote the offer:
- View the product page on a phone and a laptop. The bundle or tiers should sit near the add to cart button and read clearly.
- Add the bundle to the cart. Check the price, the saving and the discount name.
- Try a discount code on top. Make sure it combines, or doesn’t, the way you planned.
- Check the order in your admin. Confirm your team can see which items to pack.
- Check stock. Look at the component that will run out first.
- Check the dates. If the offer has an end date, make sure any countdown on the page matches it. Our countdown timer guide covers how to keep timers honest.
- Write the return rule. Decide how you refund one item from a bundle. A simple rule is to refund what the customer paid for that item at its bundle price.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Leaving a Shopify bundle in draft. It won’t show until its status is Active.
- Forgetting the app embed. With a bundle app, no embed means no widget.
- Changing a product price and not the bundle. With Shopify Bundles, the bundle keeps its old price.
- Stacking every discount. A bundle plus a sitewide code can go deeper than you meant. Set combinations on purpose.
- Fake “was” prices. Compare against the price you really charge. The pricing section of our bundles guide shows how to set a discount from your margin.
- Launching five offers at once. Start with one offer on your best seller, so you can tell what works.
How do you know if your bundle works?
Compare a few weeks before and after launch. Watch average order value, units per order and the conversion rate on the product page. Then check profit per order with your own cost data, since a deep discount can raise order value and still cut margin.
In Sam Bundles, the app home shows additional revenue, orders, AOV increase, visitors, add-to-cart rate and conversion rate, with a results row for each offer. Turn off the offers that don’t pay their way and try a different product mix or discount.
Order value also changes the math on other checkout add-ons. If you sell shipping protection, see how shipping protection affects AOV and margin.
Frequently asked questions
Can you create bundles on Shopify for free?
Yes. Shopify Bundles is a free first-party app available on all Shopify plans, and it creates fixed bundles and multipacks. Native buy X get Y discounts are also included in Shopify. Sam Bundles, which adds quantity breaks, mix and match and a bundle builder, is free on the Shopify App Store.
How many products can a Shopify bundle have?
With the Shopify Bundles app, a fixed bundle can have up to 30 components, up to 2,000 units per component, and a maximum of 3 options and 100 variants per bundle. A Sam Bundles fixed bundle can include up to 30 products, 3 options and 2,048 variants.
Why is my new Shopify bundle not showing in my store?
A bundle made with Shopify Bundles starts as a draft. Set its status to Active and check that it is published to your Online Store. With a bundle app, check that the app embed is on in your theme and that the offer is published.
Does the bundle price update when I change a product price?
Not with Shopify Bundles. Shopify says the bundle price does not update when a component price changes, so you update it by hand. Review your bundles after every price change.
Can I add a bundle to a subscription product?
Not with Shopify's bundles. Shopify's help center says bundles aren't compatible with purchase options, which include subscriptions, pre-orders and try-before-you-buy.
