To add a countdown timer to Shopify, use your theme’s timer section if it has one, or install a countdown timer app and turn on its app embed. Then create the timer, choose where it shows and set it to end when your offer ends. The setup takes a few minutes. The part that matters more is the deadline: a timer only helps when the deadline is real.
This guide covers your options, the full setup with an app, which timer type fits which offer, and the mistakes that make timers backfire. For how timers fit with sales popups, reviews and stock alerts, see our social proof guide for Shopify.
What are your options for a countdown timer on Shopify?
You have three routes. Which one fits depends on your theme and how often you run sales.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme timer section | One sale banner on the home page | Not every theme has one; often home page only, one fixed date |
| Custom code | A developer on hand, one exact design | Every change needs code; easy to leave a timer running after the sale |
| Countdown timer app | Timers on product pages, the cart and bars, changed without code | Check the plan limits and that the app loads without slowing pages |
Shopify itself handles the offer, not the timer. A discount code can have the dates it is valid for, and those start and end times follow the time zone set in your Shopify admin (Shopify Help Center). Nothing in the admin shows shoppers a countdown to that end time. That’s the gap a theme section or an app fills.
Check your theme first. Open Online Store > Themes > Customize and look for a timer or countdown section. If you find one and only need a home page banner, it may be all you need.
What should a countdown timer app let you do?
If your theme has no timer, or you want one next to the buy button, look for these in an app:
- Placements: product page, cart page, a site-wide bar and a block you can place anywhere in the theme editor.
- Timer types: a fixed end date, a daily reset, and a per-visitor timer that does not restart.
- Auto-hide: the timer should disappear when it reaches zero, not sit at 00:00:00 or start over.
- Targeting: choose devices and leave out products that aren’t part of the sale.
- Design: colors you can match to your theme, and text you can edit and translate.
- Measurement: impressions and clicks, so you can see if shoppers notice it.
How do you add a countdown timer with Sam FOMO?
Here is the setup with Sam FOMO, our sales popup and urgency app. It is free to install and rated 4.6★ from 17 reviews on the Shopify App Store (Oct 2026). Most countdown apps follow similar steps.
Step 1: Install the app and turn on the app embed
Install Sam FOMO and open it. On the app home, expand the Setup guide and click Enable. The theme editor opens on App embeds with Sam Boost Sales switched on. Click Save.
Back in the app, click Refresh status and check that Enable app embed on theme shows Active. No timer appears on your store until it does. The install guide shows each screen.
Step 2: Create a Countdown Timer
Open Notifications and click Create notification. Scroll to the urgency types, pick Countdown Timer and click Add. The editor opens with defaults: the title “Hurry up!” and the subtitle “Sale ends in:”. See create a notification for the other types.
Step 3: Choose where the timer shows
Open Timer and pick a Placement:
| Placement | Where shoppers see it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Product page (below add to cart) | Under the add to cart button on product pages | A sale on specific products |
| Cart page | Above the cart on your /cart page | A cart-wide offer or a free shipping deadline |
| Top bar (all pages) | A full-width bar at the top | A store-wide sale |
| Bottom bar (all pages) | A full-width bar at the bottom | A store-wide sale, if your header is busy |
| Landing page (theme app block) | Wherever you add the block | A campaign or launch page |
For the landing page, open the theme editor, go to the page and add the Countdown timer block under Add section > Apps. For the product page, the timer appears below the add to cart button on its own. If you want it in an exact spot, add the same block there. The block has an optional Countdown ID field, shown on the timer’s edit page after you save. Fill it in when you run more than one timer.
Step 4: Pick the countdown type
Under Countdown type, choose how the timer ends:
- Ends at a fixed date & time: pick the end in Ends at. It uses your local time. When it reaches zero, the timer disappears from your store.
- Ends every day at midnight: counts down to midnight in each visitor’s own time zone.
- Per visitor, starts at first visit: set a Duration in minutes. Each shopper’s timer starts on their first view and hides when it ends. It does not restart.
The next section explains which one to use. If you pick a fixed date that has already passed, the editor warns you that the timer is hidden on your store.
Step 5: Write the text and set the colors
Open Content to edit the Title and Subtitle, and choose whether to show the Days, Hours, Min and Sec labels. Bars also get a Button text and Button link, such as “Shop now” to /collections/sale. Shoppers can close a bar, and it stays closed for the rest of their browser session.
Open Visibility to choose devices and exclude products that aren’t in the sale. Then set the background, text and digit colors under Colors. Fill in Translations if you sell in other languages.
Step 6: Save and check your store
Click Save. Open your store in a private window, on a phone and a laptop. Check that the timer shows on the right page, the time left is correct, and it doesn’t push the add to cart button out of view on mobile. The urgency and cart guide covers the other urgency types.
Which countdown type fits your offer?
Match the timer to how the offer really ends. If the timer and the offer end at different times, the timer is wrong.
| Your offer | Timer type | Make sure |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend sale, ends Sunday 11:59 p.m. | Fixed date & time | The discount’s end date matches the timer |
| Holiday shipping cutoff | Fixed date & time | The cutoff is your real last ship date |
| Product launch at a set time | Fixed date & time | The product goes live when the timer ends |
| Daily deal on a different product each day | Every day at midnight | The deal really changes tomorrow |
| First-visit welcome offer | Per visitor | The offer really ends for that shopper |
| Always-on discount | No timer | Use a promo bar with the code instead |
Watch the time zones
Your Shopify discount ends in your store’s time zone. The fixed timer’s Ends at field uses the local time of the computer you set it on. If you travel or have a team in another country, check that both point to the same moment.
The daily timer counts down to midnight in each shopper’s time zone. A discount that ends at your midnight will not line up for shoppers abroad. For deals with an exact end, use a fixed date.
Use the per-visitor timer with care
A per-visitor timer is honest only if the offer ends when that shopper’s timer does. Shopify discount codes have one set of dates for everyone, so a code that keeps working after the timer ends makes the deadline false. If you can’t enforce a personal deadline, use a fixed date instead.
Should the timer go in a promo bar or the countdown timer?
Both can show a countdown, so choose by what else you need to say.
- Countdown Timer as a top or bottom bar: a title, a subtitle, the timer and one button. Good when the deadline is the message.
- Promo Bar with a countdown: your own message with bold and links, plus a coupon code shoppers can see and a button that can apply it. Good when the code or a free shipping threshold is the message.
The promo bar’s countdown offers the same three types. Setup is in the promo bar guide. Run one bar at a time per position, so shoppers don’t see two deadlines at once.
How do you keep a countdown timer honest?
Only show a timer for an offer that really ends, and end the offer when the timer says it will.
The FTC’s September 2022 staff report on dark patterns named “countdown timers designed to make consumers believe they only have a limited time to purchase a product or service” when the offer is not actually time-limited (FTC). In the EU, a sweep by the European Commission and national consumer authorities, announced January 30, 2023, checked 399 online shops and found 42 using fake countdown timers (European Commission).
In practice:
- Set the discount first. Create the Shopify discount with its end date, then set the timer to the same moment.
- Let it end. When the timer hits zero, the price goes back up or the code stops working.
- Don’t restart the same sale. A “48-hour sale” that runs every week is an always-on discount.
- Say what ends. “20% off ends in” is clearer than “Hurry up!” on its own.
We cover fake urgency in more detail in are recent sales popups fake? and real examples of honest urgency in FOMO marketing examples.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Forgetting the app embed. No embed, no timer. It’s the first thing to check when nothing shows.
- Timer and discount out of sync. Shoppers who see the timer at zero but still get the price, or the reverse, stop trusting both.
- Expecting a cart drawer timer. The cart page placement shows on /cart. If your theme uses a drawer, use a bar or the product page.
- Too much urgency at once. A bar timer, a product timer, a low stock alert and an email popup on one screen is noise. Pick one or two.
- Never checking the numbers. Sam FOMO’s Analytics shows impressions and clicks by popup type (analytics guide). Compare your conversion rate in similar sale periods with and without a timer, and keep what helps.
Once your timer runs, pair it with signals from real store data, such as recent sales popups or a low stock alert on items that are really running out.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in countdown timer?
Shopify discounts can have start and end dates, but the Shopify admin does not add a visible countdown to your store. Some themes include a timer section. If yours does not, you need a countdown timer app or custom code.
How do I add a countdown timer to a Shopify product page?
Install a countdown timer app, turn on its app embed in the theme editor, create a timer and choose the product page as its placement. In Sam FOMO, the Product page placement shows the timer below the add to cart button, and the Countdown timer app block lets you put it in an exact spot.
Which countdown type should I use?
Use a fixed date and time for a sale with a real end, such as a weekend sale. Use a daily timer only if the deal really changes every day. Use a per-visitor timer only when the offer really ends for that shopper when the timer runs out.
Are countdown timers legal?
A timer for an offer that really ends is a normal sales tool. A timer for an offer that is not actually time-limited misleads shoppers. The FTC named that pattern in its 2022 dark patterns report, and a 2023 EU sweep found fake timers on 42 of 399 shops checked. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why is my countdown timer not showing?
Check that the app embed is on in your theme, that the end date has not passed, and that you are on a page that matches the placement. A cart page timer shows on the /cart page, not in a cart drawer. If you closed a bar timer, it stays hidden for the rest of that browser session.
