A product bundle is two or more items sold together, usually at a lower price than buying each one alone. On Shopify, bundles come in a few shapes: fixed sets, multipacks, quantity breaks, buy X get Y (BOGO), mix and match and build-your-own boxes. Each one answers a different question a shopper has, from “should I buy two?” to “what goes with this?”.
This guide covers the main bundle types, what Shopify can do without an extra app, how to price a bundle discount without giving away your margin, and how to set it all up. The short version: pick one bundle type that matches how your customers already buy, price it from your numbers, and keep the offer honest.
What is a product bundle on Shopify?
A bundle is an offer that groups products into one purchase. Shopify’s help center defines it as “a set of two or more related products, commonly offered at a discount”.
Bundles work because they solve small problems for the shopper:
- Less decision work. A ready-made set saves them from picking each item.
- A reason to buy more now. A lower price per item makes the second or third unit easier to add.
- Discovery. A shopper who came for one product sees what pairs with it.
For you, the goal is usually a higher average order value (AOV): more revenue from each checkout, with one shipment and one payment fee instead of several orders.
What types of bundles can you sell?
There are six common types. They differ in who picks the products and how the discount works.
| Bundle type | What the shopper sees | Who picks the products | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed bundle | A set of products at one bundle price | You | Kits, gift sets, routines |
| Multipack | Several units of the same product as one item | You | Consumables, basics |
| Quantity breaks | A lower price per item at 2, 3 or more units | Shopper picks the quantity | Products people restock or buy for others |
| Buy X get Y (BOGO) | Free or discounted items after buying a set number | Shopper, within your rules | Clearance, launches, sale events |
| Mix and match | One product from each group you set | Shopper, one per group | Outfits, sets with sizes or flavors |
| Bundle builder | A discount that grows with each item added | Shopper, from a list you set | Build-a-box, sample packs |
Two related offers often sit next to these: a free gift with a larger purchase, and frequently bought together suggestions that add a matching product at a discount.
Fixed bundles and multipacks
You choose the exact items, such as a cleanser, toner and moisturizer. The shopper adds the whole set in one click. Fixed bundles are the easiest to understand, and they suit stores whose products are used together.
Quantity breaks
Also called volume discounts or tiered pricing. The product page shows options such as “Single”, “Duo” and “Trio”, each at a lower price per item. This is the simplest way to raise units per order for a product people already buy.
BOGO and buy X get Y
“Buy one, get one free” is the classic version. Variations include buy 2 get 1 free or buy 2 get the third at 50% off. BOGO feels generous, so it works well for events, but the effective discount is large. Buy 1 get 1 free is half off two items.
Mix and match and bundle builders
The shopper builds the set. In mix and match, they pick one item from each group, such as one top and one pair of shorts. In a bundle builder, they pick any items from a list, and the discount steps up as the bundle grows. Both suit stores with lots of variety, where a single fixed set would not fit everyone.
Which bundle type fits your store?
Start from what your customers already do. Look at your recent orders and ask three questions:
- Do people buy more than one of the same product? Use quantity breaks.
- Do the same two or three products often appear in one order? Turn them into a fixed bundle, or add them as a “complete the set” item.
- Do customers want choice, such as flavors, scents or sizes? Use mix and match or a bundle builder.
For example, a coffee roaster might run quantity breaks on its house blend, a bundle builder for “pick any 3 bags”, and a fixed gift set for the holidays. A clothing store might pair tops and bottoms with mix and match, and use BOGO only for end-of-season stock.
Start with one offer on your top-selling product. You learn more from one offer you can measure than from five that overlap.
Can you create bundles on Shopify without an app?
Yes, for some types. Shopify gives you two native tools.
The Shopify Bundles app. Shopify calls it a “free first-party bundles app that allows you to create and edit fixed product bundles and multipacks”. It is available on all plans. Things to know from Shopify’s help center:
- Fixed bundles can have up to 30 components, with a maximum of 3 options and 100 variants per bundle.
- The component with the lowest stock decides how many bundles you can sell.
- If a component’s price changes, the bundle price does not update. You update it by hand.
- Your store needs the upgraded checkout. Stores with checkout.liquid customizations can’t use product bundles.
- Bundles aren’t compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app or with purchase options such as subscriptions and pre-orders.
- Mix and match bundles need a third-party bundle app, or a custom build with the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.
Native discounts. You can create a buy X get Y discount, as a code or as an automatic discount, in Discounts in your admin. Shopify notes one catch: “the free or discounted ‘get’ item is never automatically added to the cart”. Customers must add it themselves, so tell them clearly on the product page.
What Shopify does not do natively is show the offer on the product page. A buy X get Y discount works in the cart, but shoppers only see it if you add a banner or text yourself. Quantity breaks with tiers on the product page also need an app or custom theme work.
Here is how the options compare:
| Need | Shopify Bundles app | Native discounts | Bundle app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed bundles and multipacks | Yes | No | Usually |
| Buy X get Y | No | Yes (cart and checkout) | Usually, shown on the product page |
| Quantity breaks shown on the product page | No | No | Yes |
| Mix and match | No (needs an app or Plus APIs) | No | Depends on the app |
| Build-your-own bundle | No | No | Depends on the app |
If fixed bundles cover what you need, start with Shopify Bundles. Add an app when you want tiers, BOGO or choice shown on the product page.
How should you price a bundle discount?
Price from your margin, not from a round number. A bundle discount is only worth it if the bigger order earns you more profit than the smaller one it replaces.
Use these steps:
- List the cost of each item: product cost, plus packaging and fulfillment you pay per order.
- Work out profit on the usual order, often one unit of your best seller.
- Work out profit on the bundle at the discount you have in mind.
- Keep the bundle profit higher than the single-item profit. If it is lower, the discount is too deep.
- Check the effective discount, especially for BOGO. Buy 1 get 1 free is 50% off the pair.
For example, say a candle sells for $30 and costs you $12 to make. One candle earns $18. A 3-pack at 15% off sells for $76.50 and costs $36, so it earns $40.50. You gave up $13.50 in discount but earned $22.50 more than a single sale, plus you ship one box instead of three.
Now try buy 2 get 1 free on the same candle. The customer pays $60 for three, which costs you $36, so you earn $24. That is still more than a single sale, but far less than the 15% 3-pack. This is why BOGO suits short sale events better than an always-on offer.
A few more pricing habits:
- Make the step obvious. Clear tiers such as 10%, 15% and 20% are easier to read than 7%, 11% and 13%.
- Show the saving. “Save $13.50” or “Save 15%” next to each option helps shoppers compare.
- Use real reference prices. Compare against the price you actually charge, not an inflated “was” price.
How do bundle discounts combine with other discounts?
Shopify sorts discounts into three classes: product, order and shipping. Product discounts apply first, then order discounts on the new subtotal, then shipping discounts.
Discounts do not combine by default. Shopify’s help center says multiple discounts apply “only when the setting on each discount allows the combination”. If they can’t combine, Shopify applies the single best discount for the cart.
Decide your rules before a big sale:
- Bundle plus a sitewide code? This can stack into a deeper discount than you planned. Many stores block it.
- Bundle plus free shipping? Usually safe, and a good reason to bundle up to your free shipping threshold.
- Several automatic offers at once? Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, and that count includes app-based discounts.
How do you set up product bundles with Sam Bundles?
Sam Bundles is our bundle app for Shopify. It adds five offer types to your product pages: quantity breaks (with an optional free gift), buy X get Y, mix and match, a bundle builder and fixed bundles. It is free on the Shopify App Store.
Setup takes three steps:
- Turn on the app embed. Install the app, then in the setup guide click Active app embed, or go to Online Store > Edit theme > App embeds, switch on Sam Bundles and save. See install and enable.
- Create an offer from a template. On the app home, click Create new offer, pick a brand color and choose an offer type. See create an offer.
- Set it up and save. Choose the products, set the tiers or pricing and click Save to publish.
Each offer type has its own options:
| Offer | What you set |
|---|---|
| Quantity breaks | Up to 20 bars, each priced as full price, percentage off, amount off or a fixed price. Add a free gift or “complete the bundle” products to a bar. |
| Buy X, get Y | How many items the customer buys and at what price, and how many they get at which discount. 100% off makes them free. |
| Mix and match | Bundle options, each with the products shoppers can pick from, and a percentage or amount off. |
| Bundle builder | The products shoppers can add, and discount tiers by item count, such as “buy at least 3”. |
| Fixed bundle | Up to 30 products, then a percentage or amount off, or your own bundle price. |
Discounts apply automatically in the cart and at checkout, so customers don’t need a code. Quantity breaks and BOGO run as an automatic Shopify discount under the discount name you set. Bundle builder, fixed bundle and mix and match orders go through Shopify’s Cart Transform, which splits the bundle into its products at their bundle prices.
In each offer’s Advanced card, you choose which discount classes it can combine with and who can use it: all customers, logged-in customers, guests, or customers with specific tags. The offer settings guide covers scheduling and placement too.
How do bundles affect inventory, orders and returns?
Plan for the back office before you launch. A bundle that confuses your warehouse costs more than it earns.
- Stock. With Shopify Bundles, the component with the lowest stock limits how many bundles you can sell. Keep an eye on the item that runs out first.
- Order lines. With Sam Bundles, bundle builder, fixed bundle and mix and match orders list every product as its own line at its bundle price. Your team picks and packs the items they see.
- Returns. Decide how you refund one item from a discounted bundle. A simple rule: refund what the customer paid for that item, which is its bundle price, not the full price. Write it in your returns policy.
- Price changes. If you raise the price of a product, check every bundle that includes it. With Shopify Bundles the bundle price does not update on its own.
How do you keep bundle offers honest?
Bundles are a fair deal when the saving is real. A few rules keep them that way:
- Real reference prices. The “before” price should be what you normally charge.
- Real deadlines. If an offer ends, set an end date and let it end. In Sam Bundles, Schedule takes a start date and an optional end date, so a countdown timer matches a real sale.
- Clear terms. Say which items count, whether the offer combines with codes, and what happens on a return.
The same thinking applies to other on-page signals. Our social proof guide covers how to show sales and stock data without inventing it.
How do you measure whether bundles work?
Track profit, not just revenue. A bundle can raise AOV and still cut your margin if the discount is too deep.
Watch these numbers for a few weeks after launch:
- AOV before and after the offer.
- Units per order for the bundled product.
- Conversion rate on product pages with the offer. If it drops, the widget may be adding friction.
- Profit per order, using your own cost data.
The Sam Bundles dashboard shows additional revenue, orders, AOV increase, visitors, add-to-cart rate and conversion rate, with a results row for every offer. Turn off the offers that don’t pay their way, and try a different discount or product mix.
AOV also changes the math on other add-ons at checkout. If you sell shipping protection, see how shipping protection affects AOV and margin.
Where should you start?
Pick your best-selling product and add quantity breaks with two or three tiers. Price each tier from your margin, set your discount combination rules, and measure for a few weeks. Then add a fixed bundle or a bundle builder for the products customers already buy together.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have built-in product bundles?
Partly. Shopify offers a free first-party app, Shopify Bundles, for fixed bundles and multipacks on all plans. Native discounts also cover buy X get Y deals. Mix and match bundles need a third-party bundle app, or the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.
What is the difference between a bundle and quantity breaks?
A bundle combines different products, such as a shampoo and a conditioner, at one price. Quantity breaks lower the price per item when a customer buys more of the same product, for example 10% off 2 and 15% off 3.
How much should a bundle discount be?
There is no standard number. Start from your margin: work out the profit on the bundle at the discounted price and compare it with the profit on the single item most customers already buy. Pick a discount that keeps bundle profit higher, then test it.
Can bundle discounts combine with discount codes?
Only if you allow it. Shopify discounts combine only when the combination setting on each discount allows it. In Sam Bundles you tick, per offer, whether it combines with product, order or shipping discounts.
Do bundles work with subscriptions on Shopify?
Not with Shopify's own bundles. Shopify's help center says bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app or with purchase options such as subscriptions and pre-orders.
