Quantity Breaks on Shopify: Setup Guide

TL;DR

Quantity breaks lower the price per item when a customer buys more of the same product, such as 10% off 2 and 15% off 3. Shopify can only approximate them with one automatic discount per tier, and shoppers see the price only in the cart. A quantity breaks app shows the tiers on the product page and applies the discount automatically. Plan the tiers from your margin first, then test a full checkout.

Quantity breaks give a lower price per item when a customer buys more of the same product. A product page might show “Single”, “Duo” and “Trio”, with 10% off two and 15% off three. On Shopify, you set them up with a quantity breaks app, or approximate them with native discounts that only show in the cart.

This guide covers how to plan the tiers, what the native workaround can and can’t do, and a full setup with a quantity breaks Shopify app. For the bigger picture on bundle types and pricing, see our product bundles guide.

What are quantity breaks, and when do they fit?

A quantity break is a price tier tied to a quantity. The shopper picks how many they want, and every item in the cart gets the tier’s price. People also call them quantity price breaks, volume discounts or tiered pricing.

They fit products that people buy more than one of:

  • Consumables and refills: coffee, supplements, candles, filters.
  • Basics: socks, tees, phone cables.
  • Gifts: items people buy for themselves and a friend.

They fit less well for one-off purchases, such as a sofa or a laptop. Nobody needs a Duo. For those, a “complete the set” add-on or a fixed bundle usually makes more sense.

How do you plan quantity break tiers?

Start from your margin, not from a round number. Each tier should earn you more profit per order than a single sale.

Here is an example with made-up numbers. Say a candle sells for $20 and costs you $8. Before shipping and fees:

TierPrice per itemOrder totalYour costProfit per order
Single$20.00$20.00$8$12.00
Duo, 10% off$18.00$36.00$16$20.00
Trio, 15% off$17.00$51.00$24$27.00

Each step earns more per order than the one before. You also ship one box instead of two or three. Run the same table with your real costs, including packaging and fulfillment.

A few habits that keep tiers easy to read:

  1. Two or three tiers to start. Shoppers compare options quickly when there are few of them.
  2. Clear steps. 10%, 15% and 20% are easier to read than 7%, 11% and 13%.
  3. Show the saving. “Save $3” or “Save 15%” next to each tier does the math for the shopper.
  4. Use your real price as the reference. The Single tier should be what you normally charge, not an inflated “was” price.

Can you set up quantity breaks without an app?

Partly. In Discounts, you can create an automatic Amount off products discount for each tier and set a Minimum quantity of items. For example, one discount for 10% off at 2 items and another for 15% off at 3.

Shopify says that when a discount applies to a specific product or collection, “only these items contribute to the minimum quantity amount” (Shopify Help Center). When tiers can’t combine, “the best discount for the customer’s cart is always applied” (discount combinations). So the highest tier the cart qualifies for wins.

The catch is visibility and scale:

  • Shoppers can’t see the tiers. The price only drops in the cart. You have to explain the offer in the description or a banner.
  • Each tier uses a discount slot. Shopify allows “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts”, and that total includes app-based discounts.
  • No per-tier reporting. You see discount usage, not which tier lifted order value.

How do you set up quantity breaks with an app?

Here is the full setup with Sam Bundles, our bundle app. It is free on the Shopify App Store. Other quantity breaks apps follow similar steps, so use this as a checklist.

Step 1: Turn on the app embed

Install Sam Bundles and open it. In the Setup guide, open Enable app embed and click Active app embed. In the theme editor, switch on Sam Bundles under App embeds and click Save. Back in the app, App status should show Active. The install guide shows each screen.

Step 2: Start from the quantity breaks template

On the app home, scroll to Offers and click Create new offer. Pick a Brand color, then click Choose on Quantity breaks for the same product. If you want a free gift on the top tier from the start, choose Quantity breaks with a free gift instead.

Step 3: Choose the products

Under Products, apply the offer to all products, selected products or selected collections. Use Select exceptions to leave items out, such as gift cards or products already on sale.

One thing to know before you pick a wide scope. Sam Bundles picks the tier from the total quantity of eligible items in the cart. If the offer covers a whole collection, one candle and one diffuser count as two. If a tier should only count one product, apply the offer to that product alone.

Step 4: Name the offer

In Settings, set three names:

  • Name: only you see it, for example “Candles 2/3 tiers”.
  • Block title: shown above the tiers, for example “Buy more, save more”.
  • Discount name: shown in the cart and at checkout. Pick something clear, such as “Duo discount”.

You can also add a short description and a footer, such as “Free delivery”, if that is true for every tier.

Step 5: Set up each bar

Each bar is one tier. Open a bar and set:

  • Quantity: how many items unlock the tier.
  • Price: Full price, Percentage off, Amount off or Fixed price. Amount off and fixed price work per item, so a fixed price of $17 means $17 each.
  • Title and Subtitle: click + Qty variable or + Save % to insert the quantity or the saving, so the text stays correct if you change the numbers.
  • Label badge: for example SAVE {{saved_total}}.
  • Selected by default: the tier that is ticked when the page loads.
  • Require variant selection: shoppers must pick options, such as size or scent, before adding to cart.

Click Add bar for each extra tier. You can add up to 20 bars per offer, though two or three is plenty for most products.

Step 6: Add a gift or extra products (optional)

Inside a bar, Add free gift gives a free product with that tier. Complete the bundle adds other products to the bar at the bar’s discount, such as a candle plus a matching wick trimmer.

Gifts work best on the top tier. They give shoppers a reason to step up without a deeper price cut.

Step 7: Switch on add-ons

Add-ons sit below the bars. Use only the ones that help:

Add-onWhat it doesWhen to use it
BadgesLabels such as Most Popular on a tierMark the tier most of your customers pick
Savings summaryShows the amount saved with the selected bar, using {{saved_total}}Higher-priced items, where the saving in dollars is easy to read
Sticky add to cartA bar that stays visible on the storefront as shoppers scrollLong product pages
Countdown timerShows time left on the offerOnly for a sale with a real end date
ScheduleA start date and an optional end dateLimited-time sales

Keep the timer honest. If you turn it on, choose Until a specific date and match it to the offer’s Schedule end date, so the offer really ends when the timer hits zero. Our countdown timer guide explains why evergreen timers backfire.

Step 8: Set combinations and eligibility, then save

Open Advanced. Under Discount combinations, tick whether this offer can stack with Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts. Under Customer eligibility, choose all customers, logged-in customers, non logged-in customers, or customers with specific tags. The offer settings guide covers both.

Click Save to publish. The widget appears next to the product form on its own. To move it, add the Volume Discount block in the theme editor. Full field reference: set up quantity breaks.

How do the discounts reach checkout?

Customers don’t enter a code. Sam Bundles runs quantity breaks as an automatic Shopify discount. When the cart reaches a tier’s quantity, the price drops in the cart and at checkout under your Discount name.

This also means quantity breaks follow Shopify’s discount rules. Shopify calculates product discounts first, then order discounts, then shipping discounts (discount combinations). If you allow a sitewide code to stack on top, the customer gets both. If you don’t, Shopify applies whichever single discount is better for the cart.

What should you test before you launch?

Run a test order before you promote the offer:

  1. Check the page on a phone. The tiers should sit near the add to cart button and fit without sideways scrolling.
  2. Add each tier to the cart. Confirm the price per item, the total and the discount name.
  3. Mix variants. Add two different scents or sizes and check that the tier applies the way you expect.
  4. Try a discount code on top. It should stack, or not, as you set in Advanced.
  5. Check the gift. If a tier has a free gift, confirm it is free in the cart and shows on the order.
  6. Check other languages. If your store sells in several languages, translate the widget text. See translations.

What mistakes should you avoid with quantity breaks?

  • Tiers that lose money. Run the margin table first. A Trio at 30% off can earn less than a Single.
  • Too many tiers. Five options with similar savings slow shoppers down.
  • A scope that’s too wide. A collection-wide offer lets shoppers mix products into a tier. That may be fine, but decide it on purpose.
  • Fake urgency. No reset timers and no “was” prices you never charged.
  • Forgetting the app embed. No embed, no widget.
  • Launching on every product at once. Start with your best seller so you can measure the effect.

How do you know your quantity breaks are working?

Compare a few weeks before and after launch. Watch units per order, average order value and the conversion rate on the product page. Then check profit per order with your own costs, since a deep discount can raise order value and still shrink margin.

In Sam Bundles, the app home shows additional revenue, orders, AOV increase, visitors, add-to-cart rate and conversion rate, with a results row for each offer. If most customers pick the Single tier, the step up may be too small. If almost everyone picks the top tier, the discount may be deeper than it needs to be.

Once quantity breaks are running, the next step is often a fixed bundle or BOGO for related products. How to create bundles on Shopify walks through each method.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have quantity breaks built in?

Not as a product page feature. You can create an automatic Amount off products discount with a Minimum quantity of items for each tier, and Shopify applies the best one when they can not combine. The tiers only show up as a lower price in the cart, so you need a banner, theme work or an app to show them on the product page.

How many quantity break tiers should I offer?

Most stores start with two or three, such as Single, Duo and Trio. Each tier should be a clear step up in savings that you can still afford at your margin. Sam Bundles allows up to 20 bars per offer, but more choices are harder for shoppers to compare.

Can customers mix variants or products to reach a tier?

In Sam Bundles, the tier is picked from the total quantity of eligible items in the cart, so different variants count together, and so do different products if the offer covers them. To limit a tier to one product, apply the offer to that product only.

Do quantity breaks work with discount codes?

Only if you allow it. Shopify applies discounts together only when each discount allows the combination. In Sam Bundles, the Advanced card on each offer lets you tick product, order and shipping discounts it can combine with.

Do customers need a code for quantity breaks?

Not with an automatic discount. Sam Bundles runs quantity breaks as an automatic Shopify discount, so the price drops in the cart and at checkout under the discount name you set.
