How Shipping Protection Affects AOV and Margin

TL;DR

An optional protection fee raises average order value by roughly attach rate times average fee. With a self-funded app, the fee is almost pure margin until you pay claims, so it can lift margin per order more than its size suggests. The effect depends on your claim rate, fee and attach rate. Use your own numbers; the examples here are illustrations, not benchmarks.

An optional shipping protection fee raises average order value by roughly attach rate × average fee. That sounds small, but with a self-funded app the fee has no product cost, so after claims it adds almost directly to profit. Below are worked examples to show how it plays out. They are illustrations, not benchmarks: use your own numbers.

For the revenue model, see shipping protection revenue and the shipping protection guide.

How does protection change AOV?

AOV lift ≈ attach rate × average fee

Attach rateAverage feeAOV lift
30%$2.00$0.60
50%$2.00$1.00
50%$3.50$1.75

Report AOV with and without the fee, so product performance stays visible.

Why is a small fee worth more than it looks?

Product revenue carries cost of goods, payment fees and often shipping costs, so only part of each product dollar becomes profit. A protection fee has no product cost. Its only costs are the claims it funds and the app itself. That is why a fee worth 2% of revenue can move gross profit by more than 2%: almost all of it reaches the bottom line once claims are paid.

How does it change margin per order?

Example store, per 1,000 orders:

Without protectionWith protection
Product revenue$60,000$60,000
Cost of goods (40%)$24,000$24,000
Protection fees (50% × $2.50)$0$1,250
Losses paid from margin$600$0
Claims paid from fees$0$600
App cost$0$9
Gross profit$35,400$36,641

In this example, the store was already absorbing $600 of losses. With protection, those losses are funded by fees, and the remaining $641 is extra profit. Gross margin moves from 59.0% to about 59.8% of total revenue.

Does protection affect conversion?

It can, in either direction. A clear, optional widget with the price beside it rarely puts customers off, and some customers feel more confident buying when cover is available. A widget that is pre-selected without a clear “optional” label, or a fee that appears late in checkout, can raise abandonment and complaints. Measure checkout conversion for a few weeks before and after launch, and compare the change against the extra profit per 1,000 orders. If conversion falls by more than the protection profit is worth, change the placement or wording before you drop protection altogether.

How does order value change the picture?

For high-AOV stores, a percentage fee with a cap keeps the fee fair while still funding expensive claims. For low-AOV stores, a small fixed fee or a minimum keeps protection worth offering. Price bands by cart value handle both. See how much to charge for shipping protection.

What can make the math worse?

  • Low attach rate: the fee covers fewer orders, so less funding.
  • High claim rate: claims eat most of the fees.
  • Fee too low for your average order value.
  • Generous claim approvals without evidence.
  • Conversion drop if the widget is pushy or the fee feels hidden.

What numbers do you need?

  1. Orders per month.
  2. Current loss rate and cost per loss.
  3. Expected attach rate (start conservative).
  4. Planned fee or price bands.
  5. App cost.

Run them through the shipping protection calculator.

How should you report it?

  • AOV with and without the fee.
  • Protection revenue and claims paid as separate lines.
  • Loss ratio: claims ÷ fees. See loss ratio.
  • Checkout conversion before and after launch.

Frequently asked questions

Does shipping protection increase average order value?

Yes, by roughly the attach rate times the average fee. At a 50% attach rate and a $2 fee, AOV rises by about $1.

Why does a small fee affect margin so much?

Because the fee has no product cost. After claims and the app cost, what remains adds directly to profit, while product revenue carries cost of goods.

Should the protection fee count in AOV?

Report both: AOV with and without the fee. That keeps product performance and protection revenue easy to compare.
