Shopify’s native bundles cover fixed sets and multipacks, and native discounts cover buy X get Y in the cart. A third-party Shopify bundles app covers the rest: tiers, BOGO and choice shown right on the product page, plus reporting on each offer.
So the real question is not “app or no app”. It is which bundle types you want to sell, and where shoppers should see them. This post compares the two side by side, shows the native workarounds and their limits, and gives you a checklist for picking an app. For step-by-step setup of each method, see how to create bundles on Shopify.
What do you get with Shopify’s native bundles?
“Native” means two tools Shopify gives you at no extra cost.
The Shopify Bundles app. It is made by Shopify and listed as free on the Shopify App Store. Shopify’s help center calls it a “free first-party bundles app that allows you to create and edit fixed product bundles and multipacks”, available on all plans. Each bundle is its own product in your admin, with its own SKU, images and price.
Native discounts. In Discounts, you can create a buy X get Y deal, or an amount off products discount with a Minimum quantity of items. They run as a code or as an automatic discount, and apply in the cart and at checkout.
What these tools don’t do is show an offer on the product page. A Shopify bundle appears as its own product. A discount works in the cart, but shoppers only learn about it if you add a banner or text yourself.
What does a Shopify bundles app add?
A bundle app puts the offer inside the product page, next to the add to cart button, and applies the discount for the shopper. Most apps add some mix of these:
- Quantity breaks: tiers such as Single, Duo and Trio, each with a lower price per item.
- BOGO shown on the page: the shopper sees “buy 1 get 1 free” and picks variants for every item.
- Mix and match: one product from each group you set.
- Bundle builder: the shopper picks any items from a list, and the discount grows with each one.
- Free gifts and “complete the set” items attached to a tier.
- Offer analytics: revenue, orders and conversion per offer.
The trade-off is one more app on your store: a storefront script, another admin to learn, and one more thing to check after theme updates.
How do native bundles and a bundle app compare?
Here is the side-by-side view. The native column comes from Shopify’s help center (Shopify Bundles, eligibility and considerations). The app column describes Sam Bundles, our app. Other apps differ, so check their docs.
| Shopify Bundles + native discounts | Sam Bundles (example app) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed bundles | Yes, up to 30 components, 3 options and 100 variants | Yes, up to 30 products, 3 options and 2,048 variants |
| Multipacks | Yes | Through quantity breaks on the same product |
| Quantity breaks on the product page | No | Yes, up to 20 bars per offer |
| Buy X get Y | In the cart only; the “get” item is never added automatically | Shown on the product page, with variant picks for paid and free items |
| Mix and match | No (Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus only) | Yes |
| Build-your-own bundle | No | Yes, with tiers by item count |
| Where the offer appears | As its own product page; discounts only in the cart | A widget on the product page, or an app block you place |
| How the discount reaches checkout | Bundle price you set, or a discount on the parent bundle | Automatic Shopify discount (quantity breaks, BOGO) or Cart Transform (bundles) |
| Applies to many products at once | No, one bundle product per set | Quantity breaks and BOGO apply to all, selected products or collections |
| Order lines | Items listed with their own SKUs | Bundle items expanded into individual products at bundle prices |
| Scheduling | Native discounts have active dates | Start date and optional end date on every offer |
| Reporting per offer | No dedicated report | Revenue, orders, AOV increase and conversion per offer |
| Cost | Free | Free on the Shopify App Store |
Two native limits are worth knowing before you build a catalog on Shopify Bundles. If a component’s price changes, “the bundle price doesn’t update”, so you edit it by hand. And bundles “aren’t compatible with purchase options”, which includes subscriptions and pre-orders.
Shopify Bundles also has strengths an app may not match. Shopify lists the Online Store, Shop, Shopify POS and headless storefronts as supported channels. Each bundle has its own product page, which you can describe and optimize like any product.
Can you fake quantity breaks with native discounts?
Partly. You can create one automatic Amount off products discount per tier, each with a Minimum quantity of items: 10% off at 2, 15% off at 3, and so on. If the tiers can’t combine, Shopify’s discount combinations page says “the best discount for the customer’s cart is always applied”. So the highest tier the cart qualifies for wins.
The workaround has real gaps:
- Shoppers can’t see the tiers. The price drops only in the cart. You have to explain the offer in the product description or a banner.
- It uses up your discount slots. Shopify allows “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts”, and that total includes app-based discounts. Three tiers on two products already use six.
- The minimum counts every eligible item in the cart. If one discount covers a collection, two different products can unlock a tier you meant for buying more of one product.
- No reporting per tier. You see discount usage, not which tier lifted order value.
The same goes for BOGO. Shopify’s buy X get Y help page says “the free or discounted ‘get’ item is never automatically added to the cart”. If the shopper doesn’t add it, they don’t get it.
When are native bundles enough?
Stay native if most of these are true:
- You sell a few fixed sets. Gift boxes, starter kits or a 3-pack, where you pick the items.
- Each set deserves its own product page. You want to write copy, add photos and rank it in search on its own.
- You sell on POS or a headless storefront. Shopify lists both as supported for its bundles.
- Your BOGO is a short event. A native buy X get Y discount plus a clear banner covers a weekend sale.
- You want the fewest apps possible. Nothing extra loads on your product pages.
When do you need a bundles app?
Add an app when shoppers should make the choice on the product page:
- You want quantity tiers on a product people restock. Coffee, supplements, socks, refills.
- Your customers want choice. Flavors, scents or sizes, where one fixed set won’t fit everyone. Mix and match and bundle builders handle this.
- You run BOGO often. Showing the deal and letting shoppers pick both variants avoids the “my free item didn’t apply” support ticket.
- You want one offer across a collection. Creating a separate bundle product for every combination doesn’t scale.
- You want to see what each offer earns. Per-offer revenue and conversion help you drop the ones that don’t pay.

Is there a free Shopify bundle app?
Yes, a few. Shopify Bundles is free, and native discounts are included in every plan. Other bundle apps may offer a free plan too. Read the listing for limits on orders, offers or features before you build around one.
Sam Bundles is free on the Shopify App Store. It includes all five offer types: quantity breaks (with an optional free gift), buy X get Y, mix and match, a bundle builder and fixed bundles.
How do you choose a bundles app?
Use this checklist when you compare listings and docs:
- Offer types: Does it cover the types you need now and next quarter, not just one?
- Discounts without codes: Does the discount apply automatically, through Shopify’s own discount system? Sam Bundles runs quantity breaks and BOGO as an automatic Shopify discount under a name you set.
- Combination control: Can you choose, per offer, whether it stacks with product, order and shipping discounts? This stops a bundle plus a sitewide code from going deeper than you planned. See offer settings.
- Clean orders: Does your team see every item to pick and pack? With Sam Bundles, Shopify’s Cart Transform expands fixed, mix and match and builder bundles into the individual products at their bundle prices.
- Placement: Does the widget appear on its own, and can you move it with an app block in the theme editor?
- Page speed: Does the script load asynchronously? Sam Bundles reads offer settings from your store’s own data, so the widget doesn’t call ShopWil’s servers to render.
- Scheduling and eligibility: Can an offer start and end on set dates, or show only to logged-in or tagged customers?
- Languages: Can you translate the widget for each store language? Sam Bundles has a translations page for widget texts.
Can you use native bundles and an app together?
Yes, and many stores do. A common split: keep a few curated gift sets in Shopify Bundles, and run quantity breaks or a bundle builder with an app.
Keep it simple:
- One offer per product. Don’t put a Shopify bundle and an app offer on the same item. Shoppers get two prices and you get support tickets.
- Set combinations on purpose. Decide whether app offers stack with your native codes, and set it on both sides.
- Count your automatic discounts. App discounts share the limit of 25 with your own.
- Test a full checkout. Add each offer to the cart, try a code on top, and check the order in your admin.
Which should you pick?
Start from what your customers already buy.
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| A few fixed gift sets or kits | Shopify Bundles |
| A one-off BOGO weekend | Native buy X get Y discount, plus a banner |
| Products people buy in 2s and 3s | Bundle app with quantity breaks |
| Lots of flavors, sizes or scents | Bundle app with mix and match or a bundle builder |
| Fixed sets and tiers at once | Both, on different products |
Whichever you choose, launch one offer on your best seller, measure order value and profit for a few weeks, then add the next. To see how the five offer types look on a product page, visit the Sam Bundles page or read the user guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Shopify Bundles app free?
Yes. Shopify Bundles is made by Shopify, listed as free on the Shopify App Store, and available on all Shopify plans. It creates fixed bundles and multipacks.
Can Shopify do quantity breaks without an app?
Only partly. You can create one automatic discount per tier, each with a minimum quantity of items, and Shopify applies the best one when they can't combine. Nothing shows the tiers on the product page, and each tier counts toward the limit of 25 active automatic discounts.
Does Shopify Bundles support mix and match bundles?
No. Shopify's help center says the Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles. You need a third-party bundle app, or a custom build with the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.
Is there a free Shopify bundle app for quantity breaks and BOGO?
Some bundle apps offer free plans, so check each listing for limits. Sam Bundles, our app, is free on the Shopify App Store and includes quantity breaks, buy X get Y, mix and match, a bundle builder and fixed bundles.
Can I use Shopify Bundles and a bundle app at the same time?
You can, but keep them on different products, set discount combinations on purpose, and test a full checkout. Automatic discounts from apps count toward Shopify's limit of 25 active automatic discounts.
