Holiday Gift Bundles: Gift Sets and Gift Boxes on Shopify

TL;DR

Holiday gift bundles work when they remove the guesswork for the buyer. Offer two or three ready-made gift sets at round price points, a pick-your-gift box for buyers who know the recipient, and a build-a-box for everyone else. Include the gift box as a product, schedule the offer to end after your last shipping date, and only show a "was" price you really charged.

Holiday gift bundles sell because they answer the gift buyer’s real question: “What do I get them?” A ready-made gift set, a box the buyer fills, or a pick-any-three offer turns your catalog into a finished present. Your job is to make the choice easy, price it honestly and stop selling before you can’t ship in time.

This post is about gift sets and gift boxes. For how every bundle type works on Shopify, start with the product bundles guide. If you’re deciding between Shopify’s own Bundles app and a bundle app, read Shopify bundles: app vs native.

What counts as a holiday gift bundle?

A holiday gift bundle is any set of products sold together as a present. Most fall into three groups:

  • Gift sets. You pick the items. The buyer adds one finished set, for example a candle, matches and a tin.
  • Pick-your-gift boxes. You set the slots, the buyer picks one item for each. For example: one mug, one coffee, one treat.
  • Build-a-box. The buyer adds any items from a list you choose, and the deal gets better as the box fills.

The difference is who does the choosing. Gift buyers who don’t know the recipient well want you to choose. Buyers shopping for someone close often want to choose themselves.

Which gift bundle types should you offer?

Use this table as a menu. Two or three types are plenty for one season.

How do you plan a holiday gift set?

Plan gift sets around the recipient and the budget, not around your product list. Five steps:

  1. Pick two or three price points. Gift buyers often shop with a budget in mind. For example, a small, a medium and a large set at round totals, such as $25, $50 and $100.
  2. Anchor each set on a best seller. Start with a product people already buy as a gift. Add items that go with it, not items you want to clear.
  3. Name the set by who it’s for. “Gift set for coffee lovers” or “New home gift box” tells the buyer it fits. A list of SKUs doesn’t.
  4. Include the packaging. If the set ships in a gift box, make the box its own product and add it to the bundle. More on that below.
  5. Keep variants simple. Every size or scent you offer is a choice the buyer may not know how to make. Pick items that suit most people, or offer a one-size option.

A gift set should feel complete when it’s opened. If the recipient needs to buy something else to use it, add that item or pick a different set.

How do you build a gift box customers fill themselves?

Gift box bundles let the buyer personalize without you stocking every combination.

Pick-your-gift with mix and match

Set one slot per item in the box. In Sam Bundles, each Bundle option is one slot. Name it, such as “Pick a mug” or “Pick a treat”, then click Select product to add the choices. The buyer picks one product per slot and gets the bundle discount. Our mix and match guide covers planning the slots.

Build-a-box with a bundle builder

A bundle builder lets the buyer add any items from your list, with the discount growing as they add more. For example, 10% off 3 items and 15% off 5. Group by category splits the list by collection, such as candles, soaps and accessories. A progress bar in the bundle summary shows how many more items unlock the next tier. See the bundle builder guide for tier ideas.

Stocking stuffers with quantity breaks

Small items people buy several of, such as socks, lip balm or ornaments, suit quantity breaks. Show bars like “1”, “3” and “5”, each with its own price. On a bigger bar, Add free gift attaches a free product, such as a gift bag. Read our free gift with purchase guide before you pick the freebie.

How should you price holiday gift sets?

Price gift sets from your margin, then round to a total gift buyers recognize. For example, with made-up numbers: a candle at $28, a tin at $12 and a matchbox at $6 add up to $46. A $40 set gives the buyer about 13% off and lands under a common gift budget.

Before you publish, check that the set still earns more than the candle alone after the gift box, extra packing time and heavier shipping. Our bundle pricing strategy walks through the math.

Three pricing rules for the season:

  • Only show a “was” price you really charged. The FTC’s guide on former prices says a reference price should be one the product was “openly and actively offered for sale, for a reasonably substantial period of time” (16 CFR 233.1). A brand-new gift set has no former price, so show the savings against the items’ regular prices instead.
  • Don’t raise prices to fund a “free” item. For “free” and “2-for-1” offers, the FTC’s bargain guide says sellers should not increase the regular price of the item the buyer must purchase, and all terms should be “made clear at the outset” (16 CFR 233.4).
  • Decide on stacking early. Holiday weeks are full of promo codes. In each offer’s Advanced card, tick whether it can combine with Product discounts, Order discounts or Shipping discounts.

This is general information, not legal advice.

How do you set up a gift set in Sam Bundles?

Here is the setup for a ready-made gift set. Other bundle types follow the same flow.

  1. Turn on the app embed. Install the app, then switch on Sam Bundles under App embeds in the theme editor. See install and enable.
  2. Create the offer. On the app home, click Create new offer, pick a brand color, then choose Product Fixed Bundle under Other bundle types (create an offer).
  3. Add the items. Click Browse products and add the products, plus the gift box product if you use one. A fixed bundle can hold up to 30 products, 3 options and 2,048 variants.
  4. Set the price. Choose Percentage off or Amount off, or edit the Bundle price to type a round total (fixed bundle guide).
  5. Choose placement. Tick Show on included products page so the set shows on each item’s page. Pick where buyers go after Add to cart: the current page, the cart or checkout.
  6. Schedule it. Switch on Schedule, set a start date, and tick Set end date so the set stops on its own (schedule and placement).
  7. Save. Saving publishes the offer.

For gift boxes the buyer fills, use the mix and match or bundle builder guides. If you run a gift program for business clients, Customer eligibility under Advanced can limit an offer to customers with specific Customer tags. You can see every offer type on the Sam Bundles app page.

How do you handle gift boxes, stock and packing?

Treat the packaging as inventory. A gift box that runs out stops every set that needs it.

  • Make the box a product. Give it a SKU and a stock count, then add it to each set that ships in it. If you also sell the box alone, the same stock covers both.
  • Count components, not sets. Fixed bundle, mix and match and bundle builder orders in Sam Bundles go through Shopify’s Cart Transform. Each item shows up on the order as its own line at its bundle price, so your team packs from a normal order and stock comes off each product.
  • Retire sets before a component sells out. Watch the item with the lowest stock in each set. When it’s close to zero, unpublish the set or swap the item.
  • Plan packing time. Gift sets take longer to pack than single items. Prepare boxes, tissue and inserts before the rush, not during it.

If a set uses an item that is often back-ordered, leave it out. A buyer who has to wait past the holiday is worse off than one who never saw the set. For carrier problems in peak season, see our holiday lost package checklist.

When should holiday gift bundles start and stop?

Start early enough for buyers to find the sets, and stop once you can’t ship in time.

MomentWhat to do
Before the seasonBuild and test the sets, set up packaging stock, schedule start dates
During the seasonShow your order cut-off date on product and cart pages
After your last ship-by dateEnd the offer, or relabel it so it doesn’t promise holiday delivery
After the holidayTurn off seasonal sets, keep any that sold well year-round

Be careful with delivery promises. The FTC’s Mail Order Rule says you need a “reasonable basis” to expect you can ship within the time you clearly state. If you state no time, the default is 30 days (16 CFR 435.2). Base your cut-off on your real packing time and your carriers’ published holiday dates. This is general information, not legal advice.

Set end date in the offer’s Schedule handles the stop for you, so a “holiday gift box” doesn’t keep selling into January by mistake.

What mistakes do stores make with gift bundles?

  • Too many sets. Ten gift sets compete with each other and slow the buyer down. Two or three clear choices are easier.
  • Bundling slow sellers. Gift recipients notice when a set pads a good product with filler.
  • Forgetting the box. A set that ships in a plain mailer with no box disappoints a gift buyer. Include the packaging or say clearly that there isn’t any.
  • Fake urgency. Only show a countdown or a cut-off date that’s real. A timer that resets every visit breaks trust when buyers notice.
  • No plan for leftovers. Decide in advance what happens to unsold sets and spare boxes after the season.

Start with one ready-made gift set built on your best gift seller. Run it for the first weeks of the season, compare orders against the products sold alone, and add a build-a-box only if the first set earns its place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a gift set and a gift box bundle?

A gift set is a ready-made bundle you choose, sold as one offer at one price. A gift box bundle usually lets the buyer fill the box, either by picking one item per slot (mix and match) or by adding any items from a list (bundle builder). Many stores sell both: fixed sets for quick buyers and a build-a-box for buyers who want to choose.

How do I sell gift sets on Shopify?

You can create bundles with Shopify's own Bundles app or use a bundle app. In Sam Bundles, choose Product Fixed Bundle, add the items, set a percentage off, an amount off or your own bundle price, then save. Shoppers pick the options for each item and add the whole set to the cart in one click.

How do I include gift packaging in a bundle?

Create the gift box or wrap as its own product with its own SKU and stock, then add it to the bundle like any other item. That way the box shows on the order, your team packs it, and stock comes off the box as well as the products.

When should holiday gift bundles stop selling?

Stop or relabel them once you can no longer ship in time for the holiday. In Sam Bundles, switch on Schedule and tick Set end date so the offer ends on its own. Under the FTC Mail Order Rule, you need a reasonable basis to expect you can ship within the time you state. This is general information, not legal advice.
