A bundle discount at checkout appears in one of two ways on Shopify. Either it shows as a labeled discount on the items, or it’s built into the bundle’s price. Which one you see depends on how the bundle app applies it.
Knowing the difference makes the “bundle discount not applying” problem much easier to solve. This guide explains both paths, the order Shopify applies discounts in, and a checklist for fixing a missing discount. For the bigger picture on bundle types, see our product bundles guide.
How does a bundle discount get to checkout?
Shopify gives apps two tools for this, and most bundle apps use one or both.
| Method | Used for | What the customer sees |
|---|---|---|
| Discount function (automatic app discount) | Quantity breaks, buy X get Y, free gifts | The item at full price, plus a labeled saving |
| Cart Transform | Fixed bundles, mix and match, bundle builders | The bundle and its items at the lower bundle price |
A discount function works like any other automatic discount. Shopify applies it “in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met” (Shopify Help Center). It counts toward the store limit of 25 active automatic discounts, which includes app-based ones.
Cart Transform changes the cart lines themselves. Shopify says it can “expand a cart line item to display its bundled items” and apply a fixed price per unit to each expanded item (Shopify.dev). No discount row appears, because the lower price is the price.
If you want the technical background, our post on Shopify discount functions covers how these functions run.
How Sam Bundles uses each one
Sam Bundles splits its offers the same way:
- Quantity breaks and buy X get Y run as an automatic discount. When the cart reaches a tier, the saving shows in the cart and at checkout. The label comes from the Discount name you set in the offer’s Settings.
- Fixed bundle, mix and match and bundle builder offers go through Cart Transform. The bundle splits into its products at their bundle prices.
Either way, shoppers never enter a code. That’s why the automatic discounts vs codes choice matters: your bundle discount is automatic, and your other promotions may be codes.
In what order does Shopify apply discounts at checkout?
Shopify applies discounts in a fixed order (Shopify Help Center):
- Product discounts apply first, to individual items.
- Order discounts apply to the subtotal after product discounts.
- Shipping discounts apply last.
Quantity breaks and buy X get Y deals are product discounts, and Cart Transform bundles already carry their lower price. So an order code, such as 10% off everything, is calculated on the already-discounted bundle price, if it’s allowed to apply. Shopify also applies discounts to the subtotal before taxes, then adds tax (Shopify Help Center).
The combination rules themselves, including which pairs need an eligible store, are in our guide to Shopify discount combinations. The short version: both discounts must allow each other’s class, or Shopify applies only the better one.
Why is my bundle discount not applying?
Most missing discounts come down to a handful of causes. Work through this table from the top.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Discount disappears when a code is entered | The two discounts aren’t set to combine, so Shopify keeps the better one | Allow each other’s class on both sides |
| Customer sees “Discount couldn’t be used with your existing discounts” | A code conflicts with an active automatic discount | Check Combinations on every discount touching those products |
| Tier doesn’t kick in | The cart doesn’t hold enough eligible items | Check the offer’s product scope and exceptions |
| Free item charged at full price | The item that unlocks it was removed, or the free item wasn’t added through the offer | Re-add both items through the offer widget |
| Works for you, not for a customer | Customer eligibility is limited to logged-in or tagged customers | Check eligibility, and log in as a test customer |
| Bundle won’t add or price won’t change | A subscription (selling plan) is on the line | Sell the subscription product outside the bundle |
| Nothing applies at all | The offer is unpublished, off or outside its schedule | Publish it, switch it on and check the dates |
| Some automatic discounts don’t apply | The store has hit 25 active automatic discounts | Deactivate discounts you no longer use |
Combinations are the most common cause
New Sam Bundles offers start with only Product discounts ticked under Discount combinations in the Advanced card. That means a sitewide order code won’t stack by default. Shopify then gives the customer whichever deal is worth more, which can look like the bundle discount vanished.
To let both apply, tick Order discounts in the offer, then open the code in Discounts in your Shopify admin and allow product discounts under Combinations. Shopify’s own troubleshooting steps start with exactly this check (Shopify Help Center).
Buy X get Y has extra rules
On plans other than Shopify Plus, Shopify says all products in a buy X get Y discount are ineligible for further product discounts. If a customer enters a code for one of those products, Shopify applies the best overall discount instead (Shopify Help Center).
Shopify also notes that automatic discounts need every eligible item in the cart: the items the customer buys and the items they get. In Sam Bundles, a free or discounted “get” item only stays discounted while the product that unlocks it is in the cart. If a shopper removes that product, the free item returns to full price.
Eligibility is checked at checkout
In Sam Bundles, Customer eligibility can be All customers, Logged-in customers, Non logged-in customers or customers with specific Customer tags. The tag and logged-in options need the shopper to be signed in. A guest who checks out without signing in won’t get a tag-only offer.
Some surfaces aren’t supported
Shopify publishes where each function type runs. For Cart Transform, Shopify “rejects lineExpand, linesMerge, and lineUpdate operations if a selling plan is present.” It lists recurring subscription orders, order edits and the Create Order API as not supported (Shopify.dev). The Discount Function API lists admin order edits and the Create Order API as not supported too, and says the function isn’t re-run when recurring subscription orders are created (Shopify.dev).
Discount combinations also only work on the Online Store, the Storefront API and Shopify POS. Shopify says they aren’t available on Facebook, Instagram, Google or other external checkouts. And automatic discounts created in the Shopify admin don’t apply to the post-purchase page at checkout.
How do you test a bundle discount before launch?
Run the same few carts every time you create or edit an offer. It’s quick and catches most problems.
- Check the app embed. In Sam Bundles, App status should show Active. If it doesn’t, follow install and enable. No embed, no widget.
- Check the offer is live. New offers stay Unpublished until you click Save. Confirm the toggle in the Offers list is on and any Schedule dates are current.
- Add each tier or bundle to the cart. Confirm the price per item, the total and the discount label.
- Mix products and variants. If the offer covers a collection, add two different products and check the tier counts the way you expect.
- Enter your usual codes. Try your welcome code and any sitewide code. Each should stack, or not, as you decided in Advanced.
- Test as each customer type. Check as a guest and as a logged-in customer if you limit eligibility.
- Remove an item. For buy X get Y and free gifts, remove the bought item and confirm the free item no longer shows as free.
- Place a real test order. Check that the order in your admin shows the products and prices you expect, so fulfillment and returns line up.
The offer settings guide explains each option in the Schedule, Placement and Advanced cards.
How do you keep checkout pricing clear for customers?
A discount that applies correctly can still confuse shoppers. A few habits help:
- Use a plain discount label. “Duo discount” or “Buy 2, save 10%” reads better than an internal campaign name.
- Match the product page to checkout. The saving shown in the widget should be the saving at checkout. Test after every price change.
- Decide stacking before a sale. If a big sale code shouldn’t stack with bundles, set that on purpose and say so on the page.
- Keep timers honest. If you show a countdown on an offer, end the offer when the timer ends. Don’t reset it.
Clear checkout pricing also protects your margin. A 15% bundle tier plus a 10% order code is a deeper cut than either alone, so check the math in bundle pricing strategy before you let them combine.
What should you do next?
Open your active bundle offers and check one setting: Discount combinations. Decide which of your codes should stack with bundles, set both sides to match, and run the test cart above.
If you’re setting up your first offer, start with the Sam Bundles user guide or compare options in how to create bundles on Shopify.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my bundle discount show in the cart but not at checkout?
Usually a discount code or another automatic discount is replacing it. If the two discounts are not set to combine, Shopify applies the one that gives the customer the best value. Check the Combinations settings on both discounts, then test the same cart again.
Do customers need a code to get a bundle discount?
Not with an automatic bundle offer. Sam Bundles applies its discounts automatically in the cart and at checkout, so shoppers never type a code. Discount codes from other promotions can still stack on top if both sides allow it.
Why does a bundle show one price instead of a discount line?
Bundles built with the Cart Transform API set a price on each item in the bundle. The saving is part of that price, so checkout shows the bundle at its lower price rather than a separate discount row.
Do bundle discounts work with subscriptions?
Often not. Shopify rejects Cart Transform bundle operations when a selling plan, such as a subscription, is on the line. For discount functions, Shopify says the function isn't re-run when recurring subscription orders are created. Test any subscription product before adding it to a bundle.
Why did the free item in my buy X get Y offer go back to full price?
Shopify only applies an automatic discount when all eligible items are in the cart, including the items the customer buys. In Sam Bundles, a free or discounted item only stays discounted while the product that unlocks it is still in the cart.
