Automatic Discounts vs Discount Codes on Shopify

TL;DR

An automatic discount applies in the cart and at checkout as soon as a customer qualifies, with nothing to type. A discount code only applies when the customer enters it. Use automatic discounts for offers everyone should get, like sitewide sales, collection promos and bulk deals. Use codes for targeted or trackable offers, like email campaigns, partners and one-time welcome deals.

An automatic discount applies on its own once a customer qualifies. A discount code only applies when the customer types it in. That one difference decides who gets the deal, who misses it, and how well you can track it.

Shopify sums it up in one line: automatic discounts are “automatically applied in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met”, while with codes, “customers enter a specific code at checkout” (Shopify Help Center). This post compares the two, shows when to pick each, and covers where bundle offers fit. For the full picture on bundle types, see our product bundles guide.

What is the difference between automatic discounts and discount codes?

On Shopify, “automatic” and “code” are methods, not discount types. You pick a type first (amount off products, amount off orders, buy X get Y or free shipping). Then you pick the method. Shopify says discount methods apply to all discount types.

Here is how the two compare, based on Shopify’s help center:

Automatic discountDiscount code

Neither method applies on the post-purchase page at checkout. Shopify notes this for both automatic discounts created in the admin and for codes.

When should you use an automatic discount?

Use an automatic discount when everyone who qualifies should get the deal. Shopify lists three common cases: sitewide sales, promotions for specific collections, and bulk purchases. Its own example is free shipping on every order over a set amount during a holiday.

Shopify says automatic discounts “can help simplify your checkout and encourage higher conversion rates and order values.” There’s no code box to hunt for, and no tab-switching to find an email.

Automatic discounts suit offers like these:

  • A sitewide or collection sale. For example, 20% off the winter collection for a week.
  • Free shipping over a threshold. Every qualifying cart gets it, so nobody pays shipping by accident.
  • Quantity deals. Buy 3, get 10% off. Our quantity breaks guide shows how to set tiers natively and with an app.
  • Buy X get Y. One catch: Shopify says customers need to add all eligible items to the cart, including the items they get free.

What are the downsides?

Shopify names two risks. Customers “might not be aware that they’re getting a discount”, and they “might receive too high a discount.”

The first one is a display problem. If shoppers only see the lower price in the cart, the offer can’t pull them toward adding more. Tell them on the product page, in a banner, or in the collection description.

The second one is a margin problem. An automatic discount reaches every qualifying order, including customers who would have paid full price. Run the numbers before launch. Our bulk discount margin math post shows how to find your break-even discount.

The limit also matters. Shopify allows “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts”, and “this total includes app-based discounts.” If each quantity tier is its own discount, slots go fast.

When should you use a discount code?

Use a code when only certain people should get the deal, or when you want to know where a sale came from. Shopify says codes are commonly used for email campaigns and partnerships. They “can lead to increased engagement, a sense of exclusivity, and a sense of urgency.”

Codes suit offers like these:

  • Welcome offers. A code sent after someone joins your list. See email popup discount offers for how to pick the offer.
  • Partner or creator codes. One code per partner, so you can see which one drove orders.
  • Win-back or VIP emails. Send a code to a customer segment, and limit it to that segment.
  • One-time offers. Use Limit to one per customer, which tracks the customer’s email address or phone number.

To see how codes perform, Shopify points to the Sales by discount report.

What are the downsides?

The big one, per Shopify: “forgotten discount codes might lead to cart abandonment.” A shopper who reaches checkout, sees the code box and can’t find the email may leave to look for it.

Codes can also travel. A code meant for your list can end up on a coupon site. If it should stay private, limit it with Eligibility (specific customers or segments) or Maximum discount uses.

Can a code apply automatically?

Yes, with a shareable link. In Discounts, open the code, click Promote, then Get a shareable link. Shopify says the discount “applies automatically to your customer’s next checkout cart, or to any active carts they have open.” You can also download a QR code for print or in-store use.

A few rules apply: one discount per link, active discounts only, and codes created by third-party apps don’t get a link from the Shopify admin. The link can open your home page, a collection or a product page.

Can you use automatic discounts and codes together?

Yes, if you set them up to. When you create a discount, its Combinations section lets you choose which discount classes it can combine with: product, order or shipping discounts. A code and an automatic discount only stack when each one allows the other’s class.

Stacking rules, calculation order, what happens when two discounts can’t combine and the limits on codes per order are covered in our Shopify discount combinations guide. Read it before you run a code on top of an automatic sale.

How do you set up each one in Shopify?

The steps are almost the same. The only fork is the Method field. Here is the flow for an amount off discount, from Shopify’s help center:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts and click Create discount.
  2. Pick a type, for example Amount off products or Amount off orders.
  3. Under Method, select Discount code or Automatic discount.
  4. For a code, enter a name (or click Generate code). For an automatic discount, enter a Title, for example 15offnecklaces.
  5. Set the value, the products or collections it applies to, and any Minimum requirements.
  6. Set Eligibility: all customers, specific customers, customer segments or markets.
  7. For codes, set Maximum discount uses if needed.
  8. Check the classes it can combine with under Combinations.
  9. Set Active dates, with an end date for time-limited offers. Times follow your store’s time zone.
  10. Click Save, then test a real cart.

Shopify warns that special characters in a code’s name can break the checkout URL. Stick to letters and numbers.

Where do bundle offers fit in?

Bundle and quantity offers are usually automatic. The whole point is that the shopper picks a tier or a set on the product page, and the price drops without a code.

That’s how Sam Bundles, our bundle app, works. Its user guide says discounts “apply automatically in the cart and at checkout, so customers never need a code.” Quantity breaks and buy X get Y offers run as an automatic Shopify app discount. So each live offer of those types counts toward Shopify’s 25-slot limit.

You still get some of the control people use codes for:

  • Discount name. In a quantity breaks offer, the Discount name is what shoppers see in the cart and at checkout. See the quantity breaks setup guide.
  • Customer eligibility. Offer it to All customers, Logged-in customers, Non logged-in customers or customers with specific Customer tags. A tag-only offer works like a VIP deal without a code.
  • Schedule. Set a Start date and tick Set end date for limited-time sales.
  • Discount combinations. Tick Product discounts, Order discounts or Shipping discounts to decide what stacks with the offer.

These settings live in the Advanced and Schedule cards of every offer. The offer settings guide walks through them.

Which one should you choose?

Start from who should get the offer. Then check the limits.

SituationBetter fitWhy
Sitewide or collection sale for all visitorsAutomaticNobody misses it, and checkout stays simple
Free shipping over a thresholdAutomaticShopify’s own example of a seamless offer
Quantity breaks, BOGO or bundlesAutomaticThe deal is chosen on the page, not typed in
Welcome offer for new subscribersCodeOnly subscribers get it, and you can cap uses

Email campaign you want to make easyCode with a shareable linkTargeted, but applies without typing
In-store event on POS LiteCodeAutomatic discounts need POS Pro locations

Many stores run both. For example, an always-on automatic quantity deal, plus a welcome code for new subscribers. That works fine once you decide whether they stack, and you’ve checked the margin on the combined discount.

Whatever you pick, be honest about it. If a sale ends on a date, end it on that date. A clear offer that everyone understands beats a clever one that confuses people at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an automatic discount and a discount code on Shopify?

An automatic discount applies in the cart and at checkout when the customer meets its conditions, so they type nothing. A discount code only applies when the customer enters it at checkout. Both methods work with amount off, buy X get Y and free shipping discounts.

How many automatic discounts can I have on Shopify?

Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, and that total includes app-based discounts. Discount codes have a much higher cap: 20,000,000 unique codes per store.

Can I make a discount code apply automatically?

Yes, with a shareable link or QR code. In Discounts, open the code, click Promote and select Get a shareable link. When a customer opens the link, the code applies to their next checkout cart. Shareable links work only for active discounts, and only one discount per link.

Should I use an automatic discount or a code for a Black Friday sale?

For a sale every visitor should get, an automatic discount is simpler because nobody can forget it. Use codes alongside it for targeted groups, such as email subscribers, and decide on purpose whether the two combine.

Do Sam Bundles offers use discount codes?

No. Sam Bundles discounts apply automatically in the cart and at checkout, so customers never need a code. Quantity breaks and buy X get Y offers run as an automatic Shopify app discount and count toward the limit of 25 active automatic discounts.
