Fixed Bundles vs Mix and Match vs Bundle Builder

TL;DR

In a fixed bundle, you pick every item and set one bundle price. In mix and match, the shopper picks one product from each group you set. In a bundle builder, the shopper picks any items from a list, and the discount grows with each item. Use fixed bundles for kits and gift sets, mix and match for sets where tastes differ, and a bundle builder for 'pick any 3' boxes.

The difference comes down to who picks the items. In a fixed bundle, you pick everything. In mix and match, the shopper picks one product from each group you set. In a bundle builder, the shopper picks any items from a list, and the discount grows with each one they add.

This guide compares the three side by side: how they look to shoppers, how they affect your margin, stock and setup work, and which one fits your store. For quantity breaks and BOGO, see our product bundles guide.

Shopify’s own help center uses similar terms. A fixed bundle is “a bundle made from a predetermined set of products and associated variants”, and mix and match is “a bundle made of interchangeable products” (Shopify Help Center).

When is a fixed bundle the right choice?

Pick a fixed bundle when the items are meant to be used together and most buyers would choose the same set anyway. Think of a skincare routine, a starter kit or a holiday gift box.

Strengths:

  • Fewest decisions. The shopper picks sizes or colors, then adds the set in one click.
  • Clean pricing. The contents never change, so you know the regular total and the margin on every order.
  • Native support. Shopify’s free Shopify Bundles app creates “fixed product bundles and multipacks” (Shopify Help Center).

Trade-offs:

  • One size fits all. A shopper who wants a different scent or flavor may skip the set.
  • Price upkeep. With Shopify Bundles, when a component’s price changes, “the bundle price doesn’t update”, so you edit it by hand.
  • Stock ties. If one item sells out, the whole set stops selling until you restock or swap it.

Our guide on how to create bundles on Shopify walks through the native Shopify Bundles setup.

When does mix and match work better?

Pick mix and match when customers want a complete set, but not the same set as everyone else. You keep control of the structure, and the shopper fills each slot.

For example, an apparel store might run “Pick a top, pick shorts, pick socks”. Every bundle has three items, but each shopper builds a different outfit.

Strengths:

  • Choice inside a clear frame. Shoppers get variety without facing an open catalog.
  • Cross-category sales. Each group can come from a different category, which moves shoppers beyond the product they came for.
  • One offer, many combinations. You don’t need a separate fixed bundle for every scent or color mix.

Trade-offs:

  • Totals vary. If one group holds a $20 item and a $40 item, the bundle total swings with each pick.
  • More stock to watch. Every product in every group needs stock, or that choice turns into a dead end.
  • Needs an app. Shopify says “the Shopify Bundles app doesn’t support mix-and-match bundles”. The other route is a custom build with the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.

Our mix and match setup guide covers planning the groups in detail.

When should you use a bundle builder instead?

Pick a bundle builder when many of your products are interchangeable and customers like to choose. Candles, snacks, small jewelry and travel-size products are common fits.

The shopper adds any items from your list, and the discount steps up at each tier. For example: 10% off 2 items, 15% off 3 and 20% off 4.

Strengths:

  • Most freedom for the shopper. Four of one scent or four different ones both count.
  • A built-in reason to add one more. Each tier gives the shopper a clear next step.
  • Great for gifting. “Build your own gift box” lets buyers make it personal.

Trade-offs:

  • Least predictable margin. Both the items and the box size vary, so your deepest tier must still work on the cheapest products.
  • More decisions. A long list is a lot to scroll on a phone. Curate it.
  • Needs an app. Like mix and match, it goes beyond what the Shopify Bundles app makes.

Our bundle builder guide covers choosing products and tiers.

How do pricing and margin differ between the three?

The more the shopper chooses, the more your margin varies. Here is a hypothetical skincare store running each type at the same discount levels. All prices are examples.

Fixed bundle: cleanser $20 + serum $30 + moisturizer $25 = $75. At 15% off, the shopper pays $63.75 and saves $11.25. Every order looks the same.

Mix and match: three groups, with cleansers at $18 to $24, serums at $28 to $38 and moisturizers at $22 to $30.

CombinationRegular total15% off$12 off
Cheapest picks$68.00$57.80 (save $10.20)$56.00 (save 17.6%)
Priciest picks$92.00$78.20 (save $13.80)$80.00 (save 13.0%)

Bundle builder: a list of products from $18 to $38, with 10% off 2 items, 15% off 3 and 20% off 4.

BoxRegular totalDiscountShopper pays
2 × $18$36.0010% ($3.60)$32.40
4 × $18$72.0020% ($14.40)$57.60
4 × $38$152.0020% ($30.40)$121.60

What this means for you:

  • Fixed bundle: check the margin once, then recheck after any price change.
  • Mix and match: check the cheapest combination. A percentage discount keeps the rate even when prices in a group vary. An amount off reads well, but gets deeper on cheap picks.
  • Bundle builder: check the deepest tier on the cheapest products. That is where your margin is thinnest.

Our bundle pricing strategy guide shows how to set a safe discount from your product cost. Whatever you choose, show savings against prices you really charge, not an inflated “was” price.

How do they differ for stock, orders and returns?

All three bundles depend on the stock of each product inside them, but in different ways:

Fixed bundleMix and matchBundle builder
If one product sells outThe set can’t be completedThat pick is gone; others still workThat product is gone; the box still works
Products to watchOnly the set’s itemsEvery product in every groupEvery product in the list
Return question to answerRefund the whole set or one item?Refund one item at its bundle price?Same, plus what if the box drops below a tier?

With Sam Bundles, fixed bundle, mix and match and bundle builder offers go through Shopify’s Cart Transform. It splits the bundle into its products at their bundle prices, so the order lists every item as its own line. Your team picks and packs what they see, and a simple return rule is to refund the bundle price the customer actually paid for that item.

Shopify’s bundle rules add one more point: “Bundles can’t contain other bundles.” To stay safe, leave existing bundle products out of your sets, groups and lists.

Which bundle type should you choose?

Answer these questions with your recent orders open:

  1. Do the same two or three products often appear together? Start with a fixed bundle of those items.
  2. Do customers buy across categories, but with different picks? Use mix and match, with one group per category.
  3. Do customers buy several items from one category? Use a bundle builder with tiers.
  4. Do they mostly buy more of one product? None of these. Use quantity breaks instead.
  5. Do you only need fixed sets? The free Shopify Bundles app may be enough. Our Shopify bundles app vs native comparison covers when an app is worth it.

You can run more than one type. For example, a candle store might sell a fixed holiday gift set and a “build your candle box” offer at the same time. Keep each offer tied to a clear goal, and start with one so you can tell what works.

How do you set up each type in Sam Bundles?

All three live in the same app, under Create new offer > Other bundle types. Here is what each editor asks for, based on the Sam Bundles user guide:

OfferWhat you setGuide
Product Fixed BundleBrowse products (up to 30 products, 3 options and 2,048 variants), then Percentage off or Amount off, or edit the Bundle price directlyFixed bundle
Mix & MatchA Bundle option per group, with Select product for each, then Percentage off or Amount offMix and match
Bundle BuilderSelect products, optional Group by category, then tiers with Buy at least a number of itemsBundle builder

Style, Placement, Schedule and Advanced work the same in each (offer settings). In Advanced, tick which product, order and shipping discounts can combine with the bundle. This matters most when you run several bundle types at once.

Before any offer shows, turn on the app embed (install guide). New offers stay unpublished until you click Save. You can see the full feature list on the Sam Bundles page.

What mistakes should you avoid when comparing bundle types?

  • Choosing by what looks clever. A bundle builder is not better than a fixed set. Match the type to how customers already buy.
  • Copying one discount across all types. 15% off a fixed set and 15% off a builder’s cheapest box are very different costs. Check each one.
  • Overlapping offers on one product. A fixed bundle, a mix and match group and a builder list all holding the same item can confuse shoppers and stack discounts.
  • Ignoring stock. Mix and match and builders need stock on many more products than a fixed set.
  • Fake urgency. If a bundle is seasonal, set a real end date in Schedule, and keep any timer tied to that date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fixed bundle and mix and match?

In a fixed bundle, you choose the exact products, and the shopper only picks options such as size. In mix and match, you set the groups, and the shopper picks one product from each group. Both keep the same shape, but mix and match lets each shopper fill it differently.

What is the difference between mix and match and a bundle builder?

Mix and match has a fixed structure: one item from each group. A bundle builder has no fixed structure: the shopper adds any items from one list, and the discount steps up as the bundle grows, for example 10% off 2 items, 15% off 3 and 20% off 4.

Which bundle type is easiest to price?

A fixed bundle. The contents never change, so the regular total and your margin are the same on every order. With mix and match and a bundle builder, the total depends on what the shopper picks, so check your margin on the cheapest combination.

Can Shopify make mix and match bundles or bundle builders without an app?

Not with the Shopify Bundles app. Shopify says it creates fixed bundles and multipacks, and that it doesn't support mix-and-match bundles. For those, use a bundle app, or build a custom offer with the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.

Can you run all three bundle types in one store?

Yes. Many stores pair a fixed gift set with a mix and match or build-a-box offer. Keep them on different products or goals, and decide which other discounts each one can combine with, so shoppers do not stack savings you did not plan.
