Sample Packs and Trial Bundles: How to Sell Them on Shopify

TL;DR

A sample pack bundle sells several small sizes together so new customers can try your range before buying a full size. Use a fixed bundle for a curated discovery set, a bundle builder for "pick any 3 minis", and a free mini on a quantity break tier to get samples into existing orders. Price trial bundles from your real costs, plan the next step to a full size, and keep "free" and "save" claims honest.

A sample pack bundle sells several small sizes together, so a new customer can try your range before buying a full size. It works best for products people choose by taste, scent, feel or fit: coffee, tea, candles, skincare, fragrance, snacks, supplements. The bundle itself is simple. The hard parts are pricing it without losing money and getting trial buyers to come back for the full size.

This post covers when a trial bundle makes sense, which bundle format fits, how to price it and how to set it up. For every bundle type side by side, start with our product bundles guide.

What is a sample pack or trial bundle?

A sample pack is a set of minis, travel sizes or single servings sold as one product. A trial bundle is the same idea with a different name. Some stores call it a discovery set, a taster box or a starter kit.

It solves one problem: people hesitate to pay for a full size of something they have never tried. A sample pack lowers that first purchase and lets them compare a few options at once.

There are three common shapes:

  • Curated set. You choose the items, usually your best sellers or one of each scent family.
  • Pick your own. The customer chooses a set number of minis from a list.
  • Sample with an order. A mini is added to a larger order, free or at a low price.

When does a sample pack make sense for your store?

A sample pack is worth the work when the answer to most of these is yes:

  1. Choice is the barrier. You sell many flavors, scents or shades, and customers ask which one to get.
  2. Products get used up. A customer who likes a sample can buy the full size and reorder it.
  3. You can make small sizes. Minis, sachets or single servings exist, or your supplier can make them at a sensible cost.
  4. Shipping a small box is affordable. If postage costs more than the samples, the pack loses money on every order.

If your products are durable goods bought once, such as furniture or electronics, a sample pack rarely fits. A fixed bundle or a free gift with purchase usually works better.

Which bundle format fits a sample pack?

Each shape maps to a different bundle type. Here is how they line up in Sam Bundles:

If two formats seem to fit, our comparison of fixed vs mix and match vs bundle builder covers the trade-offs.

Curated discovery set

A curated set suits a new customer who doesn’t know your range yet. You choose three to five items that show it well, for example your best seller, a fan favorite and one bolder option. In Sam Bundles, a fixed bundle can hold up to 30 products, and shoppers pick the options for each item, such as scent or shade.

Pick-your-own sampler

A bundle builder suits customers who already know what they like. You choose the list of minis, and the discount grows with the number of items in the box. Tick Group by category to split a long list by collection, such as “Light roast” and “Dark roast”. Our bundle builder guide goes deeper on tiers and messages.

Free mini with an order

This puts a new product in front of someone who is already buying. In a quantity breaks offer, Add free gift gives a free product with a chosen bar. For example, the 2-pack tier of your best-selling candle could include a mini of a newer scent.

How should you price a trial bundle?

Price it from your own costs, not from a round number. Samples cost more per gram or per serving to make, pack and ship than full sizes do, so a discount that looks small can wipe out the profit.

For example, with made-up numbers for a set of three minis:

LineAmount
Three minis at regular price ($8 each)$24.00
Bundle price (about 17% off)$20.00
Product cost (3 × $2.50)$7.50
Packing materials$1.50
Payment fees and other variable costs (estimate)$1.00
Profit before shipping$10.00

Then subtract what you pay for shipping. If you offer free shipping on a light sample box, that cost can take most of the margin. Our post on bundle pricing strategy walks through how to set the discount for any bundle.

Two pricing choices are worth thinking about:

  • Paid or free. A paid sample pack covers its own cost and attracts people who are interested enough to pay. A free mini costs you margin on each order, so cap it to one tier or one offer.
  • Price the pack, not each mini. In a fixed bundle, Sam Bundles calculates the Bundle price from your discount, and you can edit it to type your own price, such as an even $20.

How do you keep sample offers honest?

Trial offers use words like “free” and “save”, so a few rules matter.

  • “Free” means free. The FTC guide on the word “free” says the buyer should pay “no more than the regular price” for the item they must purchase to get the free one. Don’t raise the price of the full size to pay for the free mini.
  • Show the terms up front. The same guide says the conditions should be set out “clearly and conspicuously at the outset of the offer.” If the free mini only comes with the 2-pack, say so on that tier.
  • Compare against real prices. If you show a “was” price, it should be one you actually charged. The FTC guide on former price comparisons warns against “an artificial, inflated price” set up to make a reduction look bigger. Bundle builder and mix and match offers have a Use the product’s compare-at price option, so only tick it if your compare-at prices are real.
  • Keep urgency real. If a taster box is seasonal, give it a real end date in Schedule. Don’t add a timer that resets.

This is general information about US rules, not legal advice.

How do you set up a sample pack in Sam Bundles?

Before you start, create each mini as a product in Shopify with its own price, SKU and stock. Then follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the app embed. Install Sam Bundles and switch on its app embed in the theme editor. See install and enable.
  2. Pick a template. On the app home, click Create new offer. Choose Product Fixed Bundle for a curated set or Bundle Builder for a pick-your-own box (create an offer).
  3. Add the minis. For a fixed bundle, click Browse products and add the items. For a bundle builder, click Select products under Bundle products.
  4. Set the price. For a fixed bundle, choose Percentage off or Amount off, or edit the Bundle price. For a bundle builder, set tiers with Buy at least a number of items and the saving for each.
  5. Write the texts. In a bundle builder, the Promotion message and Process message tell shoppers how many more minis unlock the next saving. Keep them plain, such as “Add 1 more sample to save 15%”.
  6. Choose placement. Turn on Show on included products page so the pack appears on each mini’s page. Under Redirect after Add to cart, choose the current page, the cart or checkout.
  7. Set who sees it. Under Advanced, choose Customer eligibility: all customers, logged-in or non logged-in customers, or customers with specific tags. Also tick which Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts can combine with the pack.
  8. Save. New offers stay unpublished until you click Save.

The step-by-step guides with screenshots are in the fixed bundle guide and the bundle builder guide. You can see every offer type on the Sam Bundles app page.

At checkout, fixed bundle and bundle builder orders go through Shopify’s Cart Transform. It splits the bundle into its products at their bundle prices, so the order lists every mini and your team picks and packs them like a normal order.

How do you turn trial buyers into full-size customers?

A sample pack is only the first order. Plan the second one before you launch.

  • Put a next step in the box. A printed card that names the full size of each sample, with a link to its page, helps the customer find what they liked.
  • Offer a one-time code for a full size. Create a discount code in your Shopify admin and print it on the card or send it in a follow-up email. Decide whether that code can combine with your bundle offers, and match it in the bundle’s Advanced settings.
  • Time the follow-up. Send it when a sample would run out. For example, if a pack holds five single servings, a reminder about a week later fits better than one a month later.
  • Link samples to supply bundles. When a trial buyer comes back, a quantity break on the full size gives them a reason to stock up. Our post on supplement and consumable bundles covers supply tiers.

Track it simply: of the customers who bought a sample pack, how many placed a second order with a full size? Compare that with first-time buyers who bought a full size straight away.

What mistakes should you avoid with sample packs?

  • Shipping costs that beat the margin. Check postage on a real sample box before you set the price.
  • Too many choices. A builder with 30 minis is hard to use on a phone. Curate, or group by collection.
  • Samples of slow sellers. Customers notice when a sampler is a way to clear old stock.
  • No path to the full size. If the customer can’t easily find the product they liked, the trial ends there.
  • Running out of minis. Small sizes often come in small batches. Watch stock on your most picked samples.
  • Free gifts on every tier. A free mini loses its pull, and its margin, when it comes with every order.

Start with one sample pack that matches how your customers choose, usually a curated set of your best sellers. Run it for a few weeks, check how many trial buyers come back for a full size, and adjust the contents and price from there. If you sell skincare, our beauty and skincare bundles post covers minis and routines in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sample pack bundle?

It is a set of small or trial sizes sold together, such as three mini candles, five tea flavors or a skincare discovery kit. The goal is to let a new customer try your range at a lower price than a full size, so they can find the product they want to buy again.

Should a sample pack be a fixed bundle or a build-your-own box?

Use a fixed bundle when you want every new customer to try the same curated set, such as your three best sellers. Use a bundle builder when your range has many flavors or scents and customers already know what they like, so they pick their own minis from a list you choose.

Should I give samples away free or sell them?

Both work for different goals. A paid sample pack covers its cost and attracts people who are interested enough to pay. A free mini added to a larger order costs you margin but puts a new product in front of an existing buyer. Work out the cost of each sample before you decide.

Can I give trial buyers credit toward a full size?

Yes, but it is a separate step from the bundle itself. A common approach is to put a one-time discount code for a full size in the sample box or the follow-up email. You create that code with your Shopify discounts, and you decide whether it can combine with your bundle offers.
