How to Set Up Volume Discounts on Shopify

TL;DR

A volume discount lowers the price when a customer buys more, either more units or a bigger order. On Shopify you can build one with automatic discounts that use a minimum quantity or minimum purchase amount, with B2B quantity price breaks for wholesale buyers, or with a volume discount app that shows the tiers on the product page. Pick by who buys, what counts toward a tier, and where shoppers see it.

A volume discount gives customers a lower price when they buy more. On Shopify you can set one up in three ways: native automatic discounts with a minimum quantity or order amount, B2B quantity price breaks for wholesale buyers, or a volume discount app that shows the tiers on the product page.

The right route depends on three questions. Who is buying? What counts toward the tier? And do shoppers need to see the tiers before they reach the cart? This guide walks through each route, then shows where each one falls short.

What counts as a volume discount on Shopify?

“Volume discount” covers a few offers that look alike but behave differently:

TypeExampleWhat counts toward the tier
Per-product quantity10% off 2 candles, 15% off 3Units of one product
Mixed quantityAny 3 items from the Candles collection, 15% offUnits across a group of products
Spend-basedSpend $100, save 10%The order amount
Wholesale volume pricing50+ units at $9 each, for B2B buyersUnits of each variant

The per-product version is what most people mean by quantity breaks. We cover that setup step by step in our quantity breaks guide. This post looks at the wider choice: which kind of volume discount to run, and which Shopify tool fits it.

Which volume discount setup fits your store?

Use this table to pick a starting point:

Your situationRoute
One or two tiers, and you’re fine explaining them in a bannerNative automatic discounts
You want to reward bigger baskets across the whole storeNative spend-based discount
You sell to businesses with their own prices and termsShopify B2B catalogs
You want tiers on the product page with savings shownA volume discount app
Shoppers should mix products into one discountA native collection discount, or an app offer covering several products

Many stores combine two routes. For example, B2B catalogs for wholesale accounts, plus product page tiers for retail customers.

How do you set up a volume discount with native Shopify discounts?

Shopify has no single “volume discount” type. You build each tier as its own automatic discount.

Quantity-based tiers

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts and create an Amount off products discount.
  2. Under Method, select Automatic discount, and give it a clear title, such as “Buy 3, save 15%”.
  3. Set the percentage or fixed amount, and choose the products or collections it applies to.
  4. Under minimum purchase requirements, choose Minimum quantity of items and enter the tier quantity.
  5. Repeat for each tier, such as one discount at 2 items and another at 3.

Shopify says that when a discount is limited to specific products or collections, “only these items contribute to the minimum purchase amount” (Shopify Help Center). So a Candles collection discount counts every candle in the cart, and nothing else.

Spend-based tiers

For “spend more, save more”, create an Amount off order discount with a minimum purchase amount instead. Shopify notes that for order discounts, both the total before product discounts and the subtotal after them must meet the minimum. In practice, a product discount can push a cart back below your spend tier.

What the native route can’t do

  • No tier table on the product page. The price only drops in the cart, so you need a banner or description text to explain the offer.
  • Tiers use discount slots. “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. This total includes app-based discounts” (discount combinations).
  • More admin work. Changing a tier means editing several separate discounts.

When tiers can’t combine, “the best discount for the customer’s cart is always applied”. That’s what makes the highest qualifying tier win.

How do you set up volume pricing for wholesale customers?

If you sell to businesses, Shopify B2B has volume pricing built in. In a B2B catalog, you add quantity price breaks to a product or a single variant, each with a quantity and a price. You can also import them from a CSV (volume pricing).

A few rules to know before you plan your tiers:

  • Up to 10 price breaks per product, applied to each variant.
  • Per-variant counting. “Customers need to meet the required quantity for each variant to qualify for the price break.” Ten red mugs and ten blue mugs don’t add up to a 20-unit tier.
  • Fixed prices. Once volume pricing is on a product, its price is fixed. A catalog-wide percentage adjustment no longer applies to it.
  • Quantity rules. Price break quantities must be above the minimum order quantity and fit any increment you set.

Shopify B2B “is available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus plans”, but not on Starter or Retail (Shopify B2B). Plans differ, too. On Basic, Grow and Advanced, you can have up to 3 active catalogs across your B2B markets, and you need the new Shopify Markets (B2B features by plan).

B2B volume pricing is for company accounts. For retail shoppers, use one of the other two routes.

How do you set up a volume discount with an app?

A volume discount app puts the tiers next to the add to cart button and applies the discount for you. Here is the short version with Sam Bundles, our free bundle app. Other apps follow similar steps.

  1. Turn on the app embed. Install the app, open Enable app embed in the setup guide, and switch on Sam Bundles in the theme editor. See install and enable.
  2. Create the offer. On the app home, click Create new offer and choose Quantity breaks for the same product, or Quantity breaks with a free gift.
  3. Pick the scope. Under Products, apply the offer to all products, selected products or selected collections, with exceptions if needed.
  4. Set the bars. Each bar is one tier with a Quantity and a Price: Full price, Percentage off, Amount off or Fixed price. You can add up to 20 bars, but two to four is easier to compare.
  5. Name the discount. The Discount name in Settings is what customers see in the cart and at checkout.
  6. Save. The widget shows next to the product form. To move it, add the Volume Discount block in the theme editor.

The full field reference is in set up quantity breaks. Our quantity breaks guide covers badges, gifts and add-ons.

Two settings matter more for volume discounts than for a simple quantity break:

  • Customer eligibility (under Advanced): offer the tiers to all customers, logged-in customers, non logged-in customers, or customers with specific customer tags. A tag such as “wholesale” gives trade buyers their own tiers without Shopify B2B.
  • Schedule: set a start date and an optional end date for a seasonal stock-up sale. See offer settings.

Should a volume discount count one product or a whole collection?

Decide this on purpose, because it changes what the offer costs you.

In Sam Bundles, the tier is picked from the total quantity of eligible items in the cart. If one offer covers your whole Candles collection, one candle and two diffusers count as three items. A native collection discount works the same way, since every item in the collection counts toward the minimum. B2B price breaks are the opposite: they count each variant on its own.

ScopeGood forWatch out for
One productConsumables, refills, multipacksYou need one offer per product
One collectionProducts at similar prices and marginsShoppers can mix a cheap item into a tier meant for pricier ones
All productsSimple store-wide promotionsLow-margin items get the same cut as high-margin ones

Here is an example with made-up numbers. A collection has a $40 candle and a $12 refill. A “3 items, 15% off” tier applies to the expensive candle too, even when the shopper reached the tier with two cheap refills. Check that the deepest tier still earns a profit on your lowest-margin item. Our bundle pricing strategy post has the formula for the maximum discount you can afford.

If you want shoppers to build their own mixed set, a bundle builder fits better. Customers pick products from a list you choose, with tiers such as Buy at least 2, 3 or 4 items, and a progress bar shows how far they are from the next discount.

How do volume discounts stack with other discounts?

Volume discounts follow Shopify’s normal discount rules. A product discount is calculated first, then order discounts, then shipping discounts (discount combinations).

That leads to three common cases:

  1. Volume discount plus a welcome code. They stack only if both discounts allow it. Otherwise, Shopify applies the better one.
  2. Product volume tiers plus a spend tier. The spend tier checks the subtotal after product discounts, so a big volume discount can drop a cart below the spend threshold.
  3. Volume tiers plus free shipping. Shipping discounts come last, so they usually work alongside product tiers if you allow the combination.

In Sam Bundles, each offer has a Discount combinations setting under Advanced, where you tick product, order and shipping discounts. For more on choosing native features or an app, see Shopify bundles app vs native.

What should you check before you launch?

Place a few test orders before you promote the offer:

  1. Each tier. Add exactly the tier quantity, then one less, and confirm the price changes at the right point.
  2. Mixed carts. If the offer covers a collection, mix products and variants and check the tier.
  3. Codes. Apply your most common discount code and check that it stacks, or doesn’t, as you intended.
  4. Customer types. If you limit tiers by tag or B2B catalog, test with a tagged account and a guest.
  5. Margins. Recheck profit on the deepest tier with your real costs, including shipping and fees.

Then compare units per order, average order value and profit per order for a few weeks before and after launch. For more ideas on what to offer next, see the product bundles guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have volume discounts built in?

Partly. For regular customers, you can create an automatic Amount off products discount with a Minimum quantity of items, or an Amount off order discount with a minimum purchase amount, one discount per tier. For B2B customers, catalogs support quantity price breaks per variant. None of these show a tier table on the product page by default.

Can I offer volume pricing to wholesale customers only?

Yes. Shopify B2B catalogs let you add quantity price breaks for company customers, on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. If you do not use Shopify B2B, Sam Bundles can limit an offer to customers with specific customer tags, such as a wholesale tag.

Can a volume discount count different products together?

Yes, if you set it up that way. A native discount limited to a collection counts only the items in that collection toward the minimum. In Sam Bundles, the tier is picked from the total quantity of eligible items in the cart, so items from the same offer count together.

Do volume discounts work with discount codes?

Only if both discounts allow the combination. When they can not combine, Shopify applies the best discount for the cart. In Sam Bundles you set this per offer under Advanced.

Is there a free volume discount app for Shopify?

Sam Bundles is free on the Shopify App Store and includes volume discounts and quantity breaks with up to 20 tiers per offer. Check any app listing for current pricing before you install.
