Product Bundling Strategy: Types and When to Use Them

TL;DR

Product bundling means selling two or more items together as one offer, usually at a lower combined price. A good product bundling strategy starts from a goal, such as more units per order, moving slow stock or easier gifting, then picks the bundle type that fits it. Most Shopify stores should use mixed bundling, where items stay on sale alone too, and start with one offer on a best seller.

A product bundling strategy is a plan for which products you sell together, in what format, at what price, and why. The “why” comes first. Bundles that start from a clear goal, such as more units per order or easier gift shopping, tend to be simple to price and easy to measure. Bundles that start from “everyone else has one” tend to be neither.

This post explains what product bundling means, the strategic choices behind it, and which bundle type fits each goal. For setup steps and a full list of bundle types, see our product bundles guide.

What does product bundling mean?

Product bundling means “offering several products or services for sale as one combined product or service package” (Wikipedia). In ecommerce, the package usually costs less than the items bought one by one.

You see bundling everywhere once you look for it:

  • A cleanser, toner and moisturizer sold as a “morning routine” set.
  • A 3-pack of socks at a lower price per pair.
  • “Pick any 4” snack or coffee boxes.
  • A camera sold with a case and memory card.

The shopper gets less decision work and a better price. You get a bigger order, shipped in one box with one payment fee.

What is the difference between pure and mixed bundling?

This is the first strategic choice, and it is easy to skip. The terms come from economics:

ApproachWhat the customer can buyExample
Pure bundlingOnly the full bundleA holiday gift box you don’t sell as separate items
Mixed bundlingThe bundle or each item aloneA skincare set, with each product also on its own page
UnbundlingParts of a package that used to be sold togetherSelling refill pods without the starter machine

Wikipedia defines pure bundling as when “a consumer can only purchase the entire bundle or nothing at all”, and mixed bundling as when consumers can choose “between purchasing the entire bundle or one of the separate parts”.

For most Shopify stores, mixed bundling is the safer default. It adds an option for shoppers who want more, without forcing anyone to buy items they don’t need. Every bundle type in this post is mixed bundling unless you take the single items off sale.

Pure bundling has a place, too. It fits limited gift sets, kits where the parts only make sense together, and exclusive products you never planned to sell alone. Just be sure customers won’t feel forced into paying for items they don’t want.

What goals can a bundling strategy serve?

Pick one main goal per offer. Each goal points to a different bundle type.

GoalBundle type that fitsExample
More units of the same product per orderQuantity breaks or multipacksCoffee: 1 bag, 2 bags at 10% off, 3 at 15% off
Sell products that are used togetherFixed bundleShampoo, conditioner and hair mask set
Give shoppers choice and varietyMix and match or bundle builderOne top, one bottom, one pair of socks
Short sale events or clearanceBuy X get Y (BOGO)Buy 2, get the third at 50% off, for one weekend
Easier gift buyingFixed bundle, often seasonalA boxed holiday set with a fixed price
Help new customers try your rangeBundle builder or sample-style fixed set“Build your own 3-candle sampler”
Introduce a new productPair it with a best sellerA new scent added to your top seller’s set

The goal also tells you what to measure. A quantity break should lift units per order. A gift set should sell well in a set season. A starter bundle should lead to repeat orders later.

How do you choose which products to bundle?

Use your order data, not guesses. In your Shopify admin, look at recent orders and note three patterns:

  1. Repeat quantities. Which products do people already buy two or more of? Those are your quantity break candidates.
  2. Common pairs. Which products often appear in the same order? Those are your fixed bundle or “complete the set” candidates.
  3. Variety buyers. Do customers mix flavors, scents, colors or sizes in one order? Those are your mix and match or bundle builder candidates.

Then check each candidate with a few questions:

  • Is it complementary? The items should make sense together. A phone case and a screen protector fit. A phone case and a scented candle don’t.
  • Is the margin there? Wikipedia notes bundling suits “high volume and high margin (i.e., low marginal cost) products”. If a product already has thin margins, a bundle discount may leave nothing.
  • Is stock reliable? A bundle can only sell as long as every part is in stock. With the Shopify Bundles app, the component with the lowest stock sets how many bundles you can sell.
  • Does it ship well together? Check box size and weight before you promise a set.

What about slow-moving stock?

Pairing a best seller with a slow item can move stock. It works when buyers of the main product would want the slow item anyway, such as a refill pack with a starter kit.

It backfires when the extra item feels like filler. Shoppers notice, and the bundle can make your best seller look less appealing. If an item doesn’t fit any of your bundles, a plain markdown is often more honest.

How do you price a bundle within your strategy?

Price from your margin. The bundle should earn you more profit per order than the order it replaces, which is often one unit of your best seller.

Here is the short version:

  1. Find your baseline. Work out profit on the usual order.
  2. Price the bundle. Work out profit at the discount you have in mind, including packaging and fulfillment.
  3. Keep bundle profit higher. If it is lower, the discount is too deep.
  4. Check the real discount. Buy one get one free is 50% off the pair, which is deeper than it sounds.

For example, with made-up numbers: a $25 product that costs you $10 earns $15. A 2-pack at 10% off sells for $45, costs $20 and earns $25. That is $10 more profit per order, plus one shipment instead of two.

The product bundles guide works through a fuller pricing example, and our BOGO guide covers the margin math behind “free” offers.

When should you not bundle?

Bundling is not always the right tool. Skip it, or hold off, when:

  • Margins are already thin. Any discount may wipe out the profit on the extra units.
  • Products are one-off purchases. Nobody needs two sofas. A related add-on fits better than a multipack.
  • The items don’t belong together. A forced pairing confuses shoppers and slows the buying decision.
  • Stock is unpredictable. A bundle that is often sold out frustrates more people than it helps.
  • You already run a sitewide sale. A bundle discount on top of a sitewide code can stack deeper than you planned, unless you block the combination.
  • The saving isn’t real. A “bundle price” compared against an inflated “was” price is not a deal. Use the price you normally charge as the reference.

How do you roll out a bundling strategy on Shopify?

Start small and add one offer at a time. A simple rollout looks like this:

  1. Week 1: one offer on your best seller. Quantity breaks with two or three tiers are the easiest place to start. See quantity breaks on Shopify.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4: measure. Track units per order, average order value, product page conversion rate and profit per order.
  3. Next: one bundle for products bought together. Add a fixed bundle or a bundle builder based on your order patterns.
  4. Seasonal: time-boxed offers. Gift sets and BOGO deals for real sale dates, with a real end date.

Before you build, decide whether Shopify’s native tools are enough. The free Shopify Bundles app handles fixed bundles and multipacks. Native discounts handle buy X get Y in the cart. For tiers or choice shown on the product page, you need a bundle app. Our comparison of Shopify bundles app vs native bundles explains the trade-offs, and how to create bundles on Shopify covers each method step by step.

How does Sam Bundles map to each strategy?

Sam Bundles is our bundle app for Shopify. Each strategy goal above matches an offer template you can start from in Create new offer:

Strategy goalSam Bundles templateUseful settings
More units per orderQuantity breaks for the same productUp to 20 bars, each at full price, percentage off, amount off or a fixed price
Reward a bigger order without a deeper discountQuantity breaks with a free giftAdd free gift on the top bar
Sell related products togetherProduct Fixed BundleUp to 30 products, percentage or amount off, or your own bundle price
Add a matching product to a tierQuantity breaksComplete the bundle adds other products to a bar at its discount
Choice within a setMix & MatchOne product per bundle option, with a percentage or amount off
Build-your-own varietyBundle BuilderTiers such as “buy at least 3”, with optional Group by category
Sale eventsBuy X, get Y (BXGY) dealHow many the customer buys and gets, and the discount on the “get” items

Two settings help keep a strategy tidy. Schedule runs an offer between a start date and an optional end date, so seasonal bundles end on time. In Advanced, you choose which discount classes an offer combines with, and whether it is for all customers, logged-in customers, guests or customers with specific tags. The offer settings guide covers both, and create an offer walks through the templates.

Discounts apply automatically in the cart and at checkout, so customers don’t need a code.

How do you know your bundling strategy is working?

Judge each offer by the goal you set for it. A few signals to watch:

  • Units per order for quantity breaks and multipacks.
  • Average order value across orders that include the offer.
  • Conversion rate on product pages with a bundle widget. A drop can mean the offer adds friction.
  • Profit per order, using your own costs. A bundle can raise revenue and still lower margin.
  • Which option people pick. If almost everyone picks the top tier, the discount may be deeper than it needs to be. If almost nobody does, the step up may be too small.

The Sam Bundles dashboard shows additional revenue, orders, AOV increase, visitors, add-to-cart rate and conversion rate, with a results row for each offer. Keep the offers that earn their place, adjust the ones that don’t, and add the next bundle only once you know what the first one did.

Frequently asked questions

What does product bundling mean?

Product bundling means selling several products together as one package, usually at a lower price than buying each item alone. Examples include a skincare routine set, a 3-pack of socks, or "pick any 4" snack boxes.

What is the difference between pure and mixed bundling?

With pure bundling, customers can only buy the full bundle. With mixed bundling, they can buy the bundle or each item on its own. Most online stores use mixed bundling, because it adds an option without taking any away.

Which bundle type should a new store start with?

Start with the type that matches how customers already buy. If they buy more than one of the same product, use quantity breaks. If the same products show up together in orders, use a fixed bundle. If they want to choose, use mix and match or a bundle builder.

Is bundling a good way to clear slow-moving stock?

It can be, if the slow item is something buyers of the main product actually want. Pairing a best seller with an unrelated leftover makes the bundle look like a dumping ground and can hurt sales of the best seller.

How many bundle offers should I run at once?

Start with one, on your best-selling product, and measure it for a few weeks. Overlapping offers make it hard to tell which one changed your numbers, and they can stack into deeper discounts than you planned.
