How to Add Recent Sales Popups to Shopify

TL;DR

Shopify themes do not show a live feed of recent orders, so you add sales popups with an app. Install a sales popup app, turn on its app embed in the theme editor, create a Recent Sales notification that reads your paid orders, write a short message with first name, city and product, then set the pages, corner and timing. Only show orders that really happened.

To add sales popups to Shopify, install a sales popup app, switch on its app embed in your theme, and create a “recent sales” notification that reads your real orders. Shopify themes don’t show a live feed of recent purchases, so an app does the work. Setup takes a few minutes. Getting the message, placement and timing right takes a little longer.

This guide walks through what to check in an app, the full setup, and how to keep the popups honest. For the bigger picture on reviews, visitor counts and stock alerts, see our social proof guide for Shopify.

What is a recent sales popup?

A recent sales popup is a small card in a corner of your store that shows a real order. For example: “Emma in London bought Linen Shirt, 2 minutes ago.” It appears for a few seconds, then slides away.

It answers a quiet question every new visitor has: is anyone else buying here? A first-time visitor from an ad can’t see a queue at a counter. A real recent order is the online version of that queue.

A good sales popup shows:

  • Who, without too much detail: a first name, or just a city and country.
  • What: the product name, often with its image and a link to the product.
  • When: how long ago the order was placed.

Do you need an app to show sales popups on Shopify?

Yes, in most cases. Shopify’s theme editor lets you add text, images and some product details, but no theme section reads your recent orders and shows them as popups. You need an app, or a developer to build it for you.

Most sales popup apps work the same way. They add an app embed to your theme, which you turn on in the theme editor. Shopify’s help center explains that you open your theme in the editor, open the App embeds panel, flip the toggle beside the embed and save (Shopify Help Center). Because an app embed is not code pasted into your theme files, you can turn it off just as easily.

What should you check before you install a sales popup app?

Many apps look alike in screenshots. These are the points that separate them.

How do you add a sales popup to Shopify with Sam FOMO?

Here is the full setup with Sam FOMO, our sales popup and social proof app. It is free to install and rated 4.6★ from 17 reviews on the Shopify App Store (Oct 2026). Other apps follow similar steps.

Step 1: Install the app and turn on the app embed

Install Sam FOMO and open it. On the app home, expand the Setup guide and click Enable. The theme editor opens on App embeds with Sam Boost Sales switched on. Click Save.

Back in the app, click Refresh status. Enable app embed on theme should show Active. Until it does, no popup appears on your store. The install guide shows each screen.

Step 2: Create a Recent Sales notification

Open Notifications and click Create notification. Pick Recent Sales and click Add. The editor opens with ready-to-use defaults, so you can save it as is and refine it later. See create a notification for the other types.

Step 3: Write the message

Edit the Message and Caption. Click a variable to insert it:

  • {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}
  • {{city}}, {{province}}, {{country}}, {{flag}}
  • {{product_name}}, {{price}}, {{product_link}}
  • {{order_time}}, {{time_unit}}

You decide which details appear. Leaving out {{last_name}} is a sensible default.

Step 4: Choose which orders to show

Under Show notifications from, keep Recent orders from Shopify. The app syncs your paid orders and uses them in the popup. Then set the Time range: all recent orders, the last 30 or 7 days, a number of days, or a date range.

Leave out orders that shouldn’t appear:

  • Exclude orders with these tags: type a tag exactly as it appears on your orders, such as wholesale, and press Enter.
  • Hide test orders: keeps test orders out of the popup.

Click Sync orders now to fetch your latest orders, and check Orders preview to see what the popup will use. A Custom CSV file option exists too. Only use it for orders that really happened, for example sales from another channel. Every setting is in the Recent Sales guide.

Step 5: Set the design, placement and timing

Below Content, the editor has four sections:

  1. Design: pick a template (Classic, Trust Badge, Dark Mode or Urgency) and tick Match store style to use your theme’s font, corners and colors.
  2. Placement: choose the corner and the pages under Show on (all pages, home, product, collection, cart or specific pages). More placement options sets a separate position and animation for phones.
  3. Timing: set when the first popup appears, how long each stays and the gap between popups, in seconds. More timing options can randomize gaps, limit how many show per page, or show each only once.
  4. Translations: add your text for other store languages.

The design, placement and timing guide covers each option.

Step 6: Preview, save and check your store

Switch the preview between Desktop and Mobile, then click Save. Open your store in a private window on your phone and on a laptop. Check that the popup shows, reads well and doesn’t cover the add to cart button.

What should the popup message say?

Keep it short, specific and true. One line for the order, one line for the time.

MessageVerdict
{{first_name}} in {{city}} bought {{product_name}}Clear and specific
Someone in {{city}}, {{country}} {{flag}} bought {{product_name}}Good if you prefer not to show names
{{first_name}} {{last_name}} from {{city}} bought...Too personal for most stores
“Hot item! Selling fast!”Vague, and not backed by data

If you sell in several languages, fill in the Translations section for your own text. Built-in text such as time units follows the shopper’s language.

Where and how often should sales popups appear?

Start small and add more only when the data says so.

  • Pages: product and collection pages are where shoppers compare. The home page works for first-time visitors.
  • Corner: a bottom corner is common. On phones, check that the popup doesn’t sit over the sticky add to cart bar or a chat button.
  • Timing: give shoppers a few seconds before the first popup, and leave a clear gap between popups. For example, a store with a few orders a day might show fewer popups per page than a busy store, so the same orders don’t repeat on every visit.
  • Other popups: if you also run an email popup, a promo bar or live visitor counts, don’t let them all fire in the first seconds. Use different corners or longer gaps.

How do you keep sales popups honest?

Show only orders that really happened. That rule covers almost everything.

In the US, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, announced on August 14, 2024, bans fake reviews and testimonials and lets the FTC seek civil penalties against knowing violators (FTC). The FTC has also named countdown timers for offers that are “not actually time-limited” as a dark pattern (FTC). Invented orders in a popup follow the same pattern: they tell shoppers something that isn’t true.

In practice:

  1. Use your Shopify orders as the source. Only import a CSV of sales that happened on another channel.
  2. Filter out what isn’t a real customer sale. Hide test orders and exclude tags such as wholesale or internal orders.
  3. Keep the time true. Let the app show the real order time. If you choose a long time range, shoppers see “3 days ago”, and that’s fine.
  4. Protect privacy. First name and city are enough.

New store with few orders? The popup may show the same handful of orders again and again. Limit how many popups show per page, or show each only once, and lean on other real signals until orders build up. Our social proof guide covers what to use first.

How do you know if your sales popups are working?

Measure the popup, then measure the store.

In Sam FOMO, Analytics shows impressions, visitors, clicks and click-through rate for any period, compared with the period before. Performance by popup type adds the close rate and the mobile and desktop split. Top products by clicks shows which products shoppers open from your popups (analytics guide).

Then check your Shopify reports:

  1. Note your conversion rate and add-to-cart rate for the 30 days before you turn popups on.
  2. Change one thing at a time, such as turning on Recent Sales for product pages only.
  3. Compare similar periods. A sale week and a quiet week tell you nothing.
  4. If shoppers close the popup far more often than they click it, lengthen the gap or show it on fewer pages.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Forgetting the app embed. No embed, no popup. It is the first thing to check when nothing shows.
  • Sample orders left on. Check what your app uses as its data source, and make sure every popup comes from a real order.
  • Covering the buy button on mobile. Test on a real phone, not just the desktop preview.
  • Showing full names. Customers didn’t sign up to appear on your homepage.
  • Too many popups at once. One clear sales popup beats three cards stacked in a corner.
  • Never looking at the numbers. Check impressions, clicks and close rate monthly, and turn off what shoppers ignore.

Once Recent Sales runs well, you can add more real signals, such as low stock alerts or a sold count. The urgency and cart guide explains how each one reads your store data.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a built-in sales popup?

Shopify themes can show reviews and stock levels in some cases, but they do not show a live feed of recent orders as popups. To add recent sales notifications you need a sales popup app or custom code.

Is there a free sales popup app for Shopify?

Yes, several apps can be installed for free, usually with a usage limit. Sam FOMO is free to install. Each time a popup shows counts as one impression, the app home shows your monthly usage and limit, and the Need more? button opens a chat if you need a higher limit. Always check the current plans on the App Store listing.

Are the orders in a sales popup real?

They should be. With Sam FOMO, Recent Sales uses your paid Shopify orders by default. A custom CSV option exists for real sales from another channel. Inventing orders misleads shoppers and creates legal risk.

Can I hide the customer’s last name in a sales popup?

Yes. You write the message yourself with variables. Use the first name, city or country and leave out the last name variable.

Why are my sales popups not showing?

The most common reason is that the app embed is off in your theme. Turn it on under App embeds in the theme editor and save. Also check that the notification is active, that it is set to show on the page you are viewing, and that there are orders in the time range you chose.
