The best announcement bar ideas for Shopify tell shoppers one useful thing before they start browsing: a sale and when it ends, a code to use, a shipping offer, a new product or a change to how you work. Each idea below comes with example text you can adapt, the page to link to, and when to take the bar down.
A bar at the top of every page is also a quiet trust signal. It shows the store is run by someone who keeps it current. For how it fits with reviews, sales popups and stock alerts, see our social proof guide for Shopify.
What makes a good announcement bar message?
A good announcement bar message is short, specific and true today. Shoppers glance at it for a second, so it has to make sense at a glance.
Use this checklist for every bar:
| Rule | Weak | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Lead with the offer | “Big news! Check out our sale” | “20% off all candles through Sunday” |
| Say the condition | “Free shipping available” | “Free US shipping on orders over $50” |
| Give a real end | “Limited time only” | “Ends Sunday at midnight ET” |
| One idea per bar | “Sale + new arrivals + free gift + join our list” | One of those, linked to its page |
| Link somewhere useful | Link to the home page | Link to the sale collection or the policy page |
Write in plain words. A shopper should not need to open the link to understand the offer. The link is for details, not for the basic message.
What are announcement bar ideas for sales and discounts?
Sales are the most common use, and the one most often done badly. The fix is almost always to add the end date and the exact offer.
1. A store-wide sale with an end date
Example text: “Fall sale: 20% off everything through Sunday, Nov 9.”
Link to the sale collection. Match the end date to the date on your Shopify discount. Shopify discount codes have the dates they are valid for, and the start and end times follow your store’s time zone (Shopify Help Center). Add the time zone to the text if you sell across the country.
2. A coupon code for a set group
Example text: “First order? Take 10% off with code HELLO10.”
Say who the code is for. Shoppers who try a code and see an error at checkout feel misled, even when the fine print was there. If the code has limits, such as one use per customer, say so on the page the bar links to.
3. A tiered offer
Example text: “Spend $75, get 10% off. Spend $150, get 20% off.”
Tiers work best with two steps. Three or more no longer fit on one phone line. Link to a page that lists the exclusions.
4. A gift with purchase
Example text: “Free travel pouch with orders over $60, while our 200 pouches last.”
A real quantity makes “while supplies last” believable. Take the bar down the day the gift runs out.
5. A short flash sale
Example text: “Flash sale: 30% off outerwear today only. Ends 11:59 p.m. PT.”
This is the one place a countdown helps, because the deadline is the message. Keep it honest: if the price does not change at the deadline, it is not a flash sale. More honest deadline examples are in FOMO marketing examples.
What are announcement bar ideas for shipping?
Shipping messages answer the question many shoppers have before they add anything to cart: what will delivery cost, and when will it arrive?
6. A free shipping threshold
Example text: “Free US shipping on orders over $50. Easy 30-day returns.”
Only show a threshold your shipping settings actually apply. Check it in a test checkout after every change to rates.
7. A holiday shipping cutoff
Example text: “Order by Dec 15 for US delivery by Dec 24. Express after that.”
Use your carrier’s published dates and your own handling time, not a guess. Change the bar the morning after the cutoff to say what is still possible, such as express shipping or gift cards.
8. A shipping delay
Example text: “Orders placed this week ship from Monday. Thanks for your patience.”
The Shopify Help Center lists shipping delays among the things an announcement can tell customers (Shopify Help Center). Telling shoppers before they buy saves you a pile of “where is my order?” emails later.
9. Where you ship
Example text: “Now shipping to Canada. Prices shown in CAD at checkout.”
Useful when you open a new market. Link to your shipping page with rates and delivery times.
What are announcement bar ideas for launches and news?
Launch bars point returning shoppers to what is new. They work best for a few days around the launch, then they become wallpaper.
10. A new product or collection
Example text: “New: the Linen Collection is here. Shop the 8 new pieces.”
Name the product or collection. “New arrivals” alone gives no reason to click.
11. A restock
Example text: “The Canvas Tote is back in stock in all 4 colors.”
Restocks of popular items are good bar news. Remove the bar once the item sells through again.
12. An upcoming drop
Example text: “Batch 07 drops Thursday at 9 a.m. ET. Join the list for early access.”
Link to your sign-up form. Say exactly when the drop goes live, and keep that time.
What are announcement bar ideas for trust and service?
When there is no offer running, the bar can answer a doubt instead. This suits new stores, where shoppers are still deciding if the store is real.
13. Returns and exchanges
Example text: “Free exchanges within 30 days. See how returns work.”
Only promise what your returns policy says. Link straight to the policy page.
14. A real person to contact
Example text: “Questions? Email us at [email protected]. We reply within one business day.”
A reply time you can keep is worth more than “24/7 support” you can’t.
15. Order protection at checkout
Example text: “Lost or damaged in transit? Add order protection at checkout.”
If you offer protection, describe what it covers in plain words and link to your claims or shipping policy. Don’t call it insurance unless it is.
16. A policy or price update
Example text: “We’ve updated our shipping rates from Nov 1. See what changed.”
Shopify suggests announcements for new or updated policy pages (Shopify Help Center). It is better that shoppers read about a change in the bar than discover it at checkout.
Which announcement bar idea fits your store right now?
Pick the one message that matters most this week. Use this table as a starting point:
| Your situation | Bar to run | Link to |
|---|---|---|
| Sale running | Offer + end date (ideas 1, 5) | Sale collection |
| No sale, new store | Shipping threshold or returns (ideas 6, 13) | Shipping or returns policy |
| Holiday season | Shipping cutoff (idea 7) | Shipping page |
| New product | Launch or restock (ideas 10, 11) | Product or collection |
| Something changed | Delay or policy update (ideas 8, 16) | Policy page |
| Growing your list | Drop or early access (idea 12) | Sign-up form |
How do you add these ideas to your Shopify store?
You have two routes: your theme’s announcement bar, or an app.
Use your theme’s announcement bar
Most current themes include one. In Online Store, click Edit theme. If your theme has the feature, Announcement bar shows in the list of sections. Open it, click Add Announcement, enter the Text, add an optional link and save (Shopify Help Center).
The same page says a theme can have one announcement bar section with up to 12 announcement blocks, and you can turn on Auto-rotate announcements. That covers text and a link. For a countdown, a coupon code or a button, you need an app.
Use an app for a countdown, code or button
Sam FOMO, our sales popup and social proof app, includes a Promo Bar for this. It is free to install and rated 4.6★ from 17 reviews on the Shopify App Store (Oct 2026).
- Install the app and turn on the Sam Boost Sales app embed (install guide).
- Open Notifications, click Create notification, scroll to Promotions and click Add on Promo Bar.
- Under Bar, choose Top bar (all pages) or Bottom bar (all pages) and write the Message. You can use bold and links.
- Open Countdown if the offer has a real end. Ends at a fixed date & time fits most sales.
- Open Button & coupon to add a button such as “Shop now” and show a coupon code. Use your own code or one of your Shopify discount codes. You can apply the code when shoppers click the button.
- Set the pages and devices under Visibility, exclude products that are not in the offer, and match the Colors to your store.
- Check the preview and click Save.
The promo bar guide shows each screen. If you sell in more than one language, fill in the Translations section too. For a deadline-only bar, the countdown timer guide explains when to use the Countdown Timer type instead.
What mistakes make announcement bars backfire?
Most bar mistakes come from leaving them alone too long or saying too much.
- An expired message. “Black Friday sale” in mid-December is worse than an empty bar. Put the end date in your calendar when you set the bar up.
- A fake deadline. The FTC’s 2022 staff report on dark patterns named “countdown timers designed to make consumers believe they only have a limited time to purchase a product or service” when the offer is not actually time-limited (FTC). Only count down to a real end.
- A code that fails. Test every code in a real checkout before the bar goes live.
- Too many rotating messages. With five rotating bars, most shoppers see only the first one. Keep rotation to two or three related messages.
- Low contrast. Pale text on a pastel bar is hard to read, especially on a phone outdoors. Pick colors with strong contrast.
- Stacked urgency. A bar countdown, a product page timer, a stock alert and an email popup on one screen feel like pressure. The tips in how to add sales popups to Shopify on spacing popups apply here too.
How do you know if your announcement bar works?
Judge a bar by what it is for, and change one thing at a time.
- Pick the goal. A sale bar should send clicks to the sale. A shipping bar should cut shipping questions and cart drop-off.
- Note a baseline. Write down clicks to the linked page, conversion rate or support emails for a similar period before the change.
- Change one line. For example, add the end date to a sale bar that didn’t have one.
- Check the numbers. In Sam FOMO, Analytics shows impressions, clicks and click-through rate, with Performance by popup type for each type (analytics guide).
- Compare like with like. A holiday week and a quiet week don’t tell you anything about the wording.
The short version: one true message, one useful link, a real end date when there is one, and a new bar as soon as the old one stops being true.
Frequently asked questions
What should I put in my Shopify announcement bar?
Put the one thing every shopper should know before they browse: a current sale and its end date, a coupon code, your free shipping offer, a holiday shipping cutoff, a new product, or a policy change. Keep it to one short line with a link to the page that explains it.
How long should announcement bar text be?
Aim for one line on a laptop and no more than two on a phone. In practice that means one short sentence. Put the offer first, then the condition or deadline, and move details to the page the bar links to.
Can I show more than one announcement on Shopify?
Many Shopify themes support it. According to the Shopify Help Center, a theme can have one announcement bar section with up to 12 announcement blocks, and you can turn on Auto-rotate announcements. Rotation is useful for two or three related messages, but shoppers may miss the ones that are not showing.
Should my announcement bar have a countdown timer?
Only when the offer really ends at that moment. A countdown to the real end of a sale is useful information. A timer for an offer that is not actually time-limited misleads shoppers, and the FTC named that pattern in its 2022 dark patterns report.
How often should I change my announcement bar?
Change it whenever the message stops being true, and review it at least once a month. A sale that ended last week or a shipping cutoff that has passed tells shoppers nobody is looking after the store.
