A thank-you page offer lets customers add shipping protection after they have paid. Because the order is already placed, the offer cannot slow down or interrupt checkout. On Shopify, it runs as a checkout UI extension on the order confirmation page; when the customer accepts, the app edits the paid order to add protection and the customer pays the difference.

How does a thank-you page offer work?
- The customer completes checkout as usual.
- The order confirmation page shows a short offer: what protection covers and the price.
- If the customer accepts, the app edits the order to add the protection line item.
- The customer pays the extra amount on Shopify’s payment page.
- The order is now protected, exactly as if they had added it in the cart.
Why offer protection after payment?
- No checkout friction. Nothing new appears between the customer and the “Pay” button.
- A second chance. Customers who missed or skipped the cart widget can still add it.
- A calmer moment. After paying, customers often think about delivery, which is exactly what protection covers.
- Works on most plans. Thank-you page extensions are available beyond Shopify Plus, while extensions inside checkout steps are Plus-only.
What do you need to set it up?
- A protection app built on Shopify’s checkout UI extensions.
- The permissions the app asks for. With Sam, the thank-you page offer needs “Edit orders”; without it, customers who accept see an error that the store has not granted permission to edit orders.
- Clear wording and a link to your protection policy.
Sam’s widget settings show the Cart Widget, Checkout Page Widget and Thank You Page Widget as separate sections, each with an Active or Inactive status, so you can turn the thank-you offer on independently.
What should the offer say?
Keep it short and specific:
Protect this order from loss, damage and theft: $1.98. If something goes wrong in delivery, we’ll refund, reship or give store credit. [Add protection]
Show the price on the button or right next to it, and link your protection policy. Avoid pressure language; the customer has already bought.
Should you use it alone or with a cart widget?
Most customers decide in the cart, so a cart or cart drawer widget usually brings the most protected orders. Use the thank-you offer as a second placement:
| Setup | Best for |
|---|---|
| Cart widget only | Simple setup, most stores |
| Cart widget + thank-you offer | Catching customers who skipped protection in the cart |
| Thank-you offer only | Stores very sensitive to checkout friction |
| Cart + checkout (Plus) + thank-you | Shopify Plus stores that want every placement |
How do you measure it?
Track the share of orders that add protection on the thank-you page separately from the cart. If it adds protected orders without hurting conversion or creating support tickets, keep it. Our guide to package protection attach rate explains how to measure each placement.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add shipping protection after checkout on Shopify?
Yes. Apps can show an offer on the thank-you page through a checkout UI extension. If the customer accepts, the app edits the order to add protection and the customer pays the extra amount.
Which Shopify plans support thank-you page offers?
Thank-you and order status page extensions are available on most plans; extensions inside the checkout steps themselves are limited to Shopify Plus.
Why does my thank-you page offer show a permission error?
With Sam, the post-purchase offer needs the app's "Edit orders" permission. If customers see "This store hasn't granted permission to edit orders", re-approve the app's permissions in your Shopify admin.
Will a thank-you page offer replace my cart widget?
It works best as a second placement. Most customers decide in the cart; the thank-you offer catches those who skipped it.
