Method
How the calculator works
- Protected orders = orders per month × share of customers who add protection.
- Fees collected = protected orders × your fee (or your % of the average order value).
- Claims cost = protected orders × claim rate × average cost per claim.
- Net with Sam = fees collected − claims cost − the Sam plan.
- Break-even fee = claim rate × average cost per claim. Charge more than this to make a profit.

FAQ
Calculator questions
How accurate is this shipping protection calculator?
It is as accurate as the numbers you enter. Use your own order count, average order value and 90 days of claim history. The result is an estimate for planning, not a promise of what you will earn.
Where do I find my claim rate?
Count the orders you refunded or reshipped in the last 90 days because they were lost, damaged or stolen, then divide by the orders you shipped in that period. Customers who opt in to protection tend to file a little more often, so round up.
What should I put as the average cost per claim?
Use what it costs you to make a claim right: the product cost (not the retail price) plus shipping if you reship, or the refund amount if you refund. Store credit usually costs you less than a refund.
Why does the provider-funded option show $0?
With a provider-funded app, the provider keeps the protection fee and pays the claims, so your store neither earns the fee nor pays for claims. You still handle the customer conversation.
