On Shopify Plus, shipping protection can appear inside checkout itself. Shopify’s documentation states that checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps “are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan”. That gives Plus stores one more placement than everyone else. The best setups combine it with the cart and the thank-you page.
For the basics, see the shipping protection guide and checkout extensibility.
What does Shopify Plus add for shipping protection?
- A checkout placement: an offer inside the checkout steps, close to the order summary.
- Consistency with the rest of checkout: extensions use Shopify’s own components, so the offer looks native.
- Upgrade-safe customizations: extensions keep working as Shopify updates checkout.
Stores on other plans can still offer protection in the cart, the cart drawer and on the thank-you page. See how to add shipping protection to Shopify.
Which placements should a Plus store use?
| Placement | Why |
|---|---|
| Cart and cart drawer | Most customers decide here; also covers paths that skip parts of checkout |
| Checkout step (Plus only) | Catches customers who went straight to checkout |
| Thank-you page | A second chance with no checkout friction |
Use the same wording and price logic everywhere so customers see one consistent offer.
How do you avoid double-adding protection?
If the cart already contains the protection item, the checkout offer should show it as added rather than offering it again. Test these paths:
- Add protection in the cart, then check out.
- Skip it in the cart, then add it in checkout.
- Remove it in checkout.
- Use express checkout from the product page.
How does it fit with other checkout customizations?
Plus stores often run several extensions: upsells, gift messages, delivery instructions. Keep protection near the order summary, avoid stacking several offers in one spot, and check how the page looks on mobile. Shopify’s checkout editor lets you place and preview extensions.
Should you auto-add protection in checkout?
Some stores pre-select protection to raise attach rate. If you do, label it clearly as optional and keep removal one tap away. See opt-in vs auto-add shipping protection and the junk fee rules for the trade-offs.
How do you measure the checkout placement?
Compare the share of orders that add protection at each placement, and check checkout conversion before and after enabling the extension. Judge by fee revenue minus claims, not attach rate alone. See package protection attach rate.
What about B2B and wholesale orders?
Plus stores often run B2B or wholesale checkouts alongside retail. Decide whether protection should appear for those customers at all. Wholesale buyers may have their own freight terms, and a per-order fee may not fit. Test the checkout extension with a B2B customer account and hide the offer where it does not apply.
What about Sam’s own Plus plan?
Do not confuse the two. Sam’s Plus plan is the app’s pricing tier, which adds options like showing or hiding the widget by country and cart value. The checkout-step placement depends on your store being on Shopify Plus. See Sam Shipping Protection for plan details.
Frequently asked questions
Can non-Plus stores show shipping protection in checkout?
Not in the information, shipping or payment steps; those checkout UI extensions are Plus-only. Other stores can use the cart, cart drawer and thank-you page.
Is Sam's Plus plan the same as Shopify Plus?
No. Sam's Plus plan is the app's own pricing tier. The checkout-step placement depends on your store being on a Shopify Plus plan.
Should Plus stores still use a cart widget?
Yes. Many customers decide in the cart, and the cart widget also serves express checkout paths that skip the full checkout steps.
