Package protection
Package protection: Another name for shipping protection: an optional fee shoppers add when they buy so a package that is lost, damaged or stolen gets refunded, reshipped or credited.
Is it different from shipping protection?
Not in practice. Package protection, shipping protection and order protection all describe an optional fee that covers delivery problems. Stores and apps pick whichever name their customers understand best.
How does it show up on a Shopify order?
Shopify carts only hold products, so protection apps create a product for the fee and add it to the order as a separate line item. Stores usually rename it, for example “Order Protection”, and hide it from collections and search.
Example
A customer adds $1.98 package protection to a $40 order. The fee appears as a line item next to the products, and the store can see at a glance which orders are protected when a claim comes in.
