Opt-in fee
Opt-in fee: A charge the customer chooses to add, such as shipping protection offered as an unticked option rather than included in the price.
Why make protection opt-in?
An opt-in fee is clearly optional, so customers never feel charged without consent. It also keeps you on safer ground as hidden-fee rules tighten. California’s SB 478, for example, requires mandatory fees to be included in advertised prices, while fees for optional services do not have to be.
How do you present it well?
- Show the price next to the toggle.
- Say what it covers in one line.
- Make adding and removing it one tap.
- Link your protection policy.
Example
A cart shows “Protect my order from loss, damage and theft (+$2.95)” with an unticked toggle. Customers who want it tick the box; the rest check out without it.
