Shipping protection
Shipping protection: An optional fee a customer adds at checkout so the store will refund, reship or credit the order if the package is lost, damaged or stolen in delivery.
How does it work?
A widget on the cart, checkout or thank-you page offers protection for a small fee. Customers who add it pay with their order, and the fee appears as its own line item. If the delivery goes wrong, the customer files a claim and the store (or a provider) makes it right.
Who keeps the fee?
With a self-funded app the store keeps the fee and pays claims from it. With a provider-funded app the provider keeps the fee and pays claims. That one difference decides whether protection is revenue or a pass-through.
Example
A store charges $2.95 on a $75 order. The package is stolen from the porch two days later. The customer files a claim with photos of the empty doorstep and delivery scan, and the store reships the order the same day.
