Why is it a problem for stores?

To the carrier, a package scanned as delivered is done, so theft afterward is rarely covered by carrier liability. To the customer, the order never arrived, and they turn to the store.

How do stores handle it?

Check the delivery scan, location and any delivery photo, ask the customer to check with neighbors and building staff, and look at claim history for the address. Then follow your written rule, for example covering theft for customers who bought protection.

How do you reduce it?

Signature confirmation above a set order value, pick-up points and lockers, and clear delivery instructions all help.

Example

A tracking scan shows “delivered, front door” with a photo, but the customer comes home to an empty porch. Because they added protection at checkout, the store reships the order.
