The best shipping protection app for your Shopify store comes down to one decision: do you want to keep the protection fee, or hand claims to someone else? Once you know that, cost, placements and claims tools narrow it down fast.

We compared eleven apps using their Shopify App Store listings, checked on October 5, 2026. Sam is our app. We include it because it fits the criteria, and we describe every app, including Sam, using published facts only.

How did we choose the best shipping protection apps?

We included apps that offer shipping or package protection on their Shopify App Store listing and publish either pricing or a clear fee model. We compared:

1. Who keeps the fee: self-funded (you) or provider-funded (the app).
2. Monthly cost at different order volumes.
3. Placements: cart, cart drawer, checkout and thank-you page.
4. Claims tools: a claims page, refunds, store credit and reorders.
5. Built for Shopify status and App Store reviews.

For context, the App Store’s own organic search results for “shipping protection” on October 5, 2026 listed Shipcheck first, then Captain, Easy Shipping Protection, Navidium and Sam. We left out Easy Shipping Protection and Xcotton, because their listings do not publish protection pricing or say who keeps the fee, and Corso and Redo, which include protection inside wider platforms without a published protection price (see Sam vs Corso and Sam vs Redo).

What are the best self-funded shipping protection apps?

Self-funded apps let you keep the protection fee and pay claims yourself. Priced from your own claim rate, the fees can cover claims and leave a profit.

1. Sam Shipping Protection: lowest unlimited plan

Sam keeps 100% of fees with you for $9/month at any order volume, after a free tier of 50 protected orders. It offers cart, cart drawer and thank-you page placements, checkout on Shopify Plus ($29/month), flat, percentage or banded pricing, and a claims page with full or partial refunds, store credit and reorders. It also blocks protection on pick-up orders and is available in 13 languages. Live since February 2025, so its review count is smaller than older apps.

2. Shipcheck: top App Store search result

Shipcheck keeps 100% of protection revenue with you and says you handle claims your way, with no third party in the middle. It is free for 25 protected orders a month, then $9.95 for unlimited orders, or $39.95 on Shopify Plus with the checkout widget. It shows on cart, checkout and thank-you page, with flat or order-total pricing and multi-language support. 5.0★ from 101 reviews, Built for Shopify.

3. Captain: simple flat price

Captain lets you keep all protection fees for a flat $11/month with unlimited orders, or $49/month on Shopify Plus with cart and checkout widgets. Plans include a claim portal with email updates, auto-translation and 24/7 live chat. There is no free plan listed. 4.9★ from 311 reviews, Built for Shopify.

4. Navidium: best for subscription and upsell stacks

Navidium keeps 100% of fees with you and lists integrations with Recharge, Rebuy, Bold, Slide Cart, Tapcart and more. Plans run from free (50 orders) to $99.99 for unlimited orders with the Plus checkout widget, and paid plans include free expert installation. It has the most reviews among the self-funded apps here. 5. Insureful: low-cost plan with a checkout widget

Insureful lists zero revenue sharing. It is free for 30 protected orders a month, then $9.95 for unlimited orders, or $29.99 for the plan with checkout and thank-you page widgets. Claims can be resolved with store credit, a reorder or a full refund. 4.7★ from 75 reviews, Built for Shopify.

6. Simply Shipping Protection: best for small budgets

Simply lists no revenue share and a free tier, with paid plans from $4.99 (50 protected orders) to $49.99 (500). Widgets work on cart, side cart, checkout and post-purchase. Plans are capped by order count, so check the cost as you grow.

7. ShipAid: best if you also want returns

ShipAid is free to install and takes 9% of the protection revenue earned through the app. It bundles free returns, exchanges and branded tracking, which can replace a separate returns app.

8. OrderGuard: largest free tier

OrderGuard is newer (January 2026) and includes 100 protected orders a month for free, then $9.99 (500) or $29.99 (2,000). It includes cart and checkout widgets and a claims portal. It had only one review when we checked.

What are the best provider-funded shipping protection apps?

Provider-funded apps keep the protection fee and pay claims for you. You earn nothing from the fee, but you avoid claim decisions.

9. Seel Worry-Free Purchase: best for return assurance

Seel is free to install, and its listing says “Seel pays associated refunds”. It also lets shoppers make final-sale items returnable, which goes beyond shipping protection.

10. ShipInsure: best free hands-off option

ShipInsure is free for merchants and covers orders from shipping until they reach the customer. Its listing mentions flexible pricing and revenue-sharing options.

11. Route: best post-purchase suite

Route bundles package protection with order tracking, returns and loyalty discounts. It is free to install, with pricing outside the App Store. See Sam vs Route.

How do you pick the right one for your store?

Answer three questions:

1. Do you want the fee as revenue? Yes: pick a self-funded app. No: pick a provider-funded one.
