An email popup on Shopify is a small form that asks visitors for their email address, usually in exchange for a welcome discount. You add it with an app, choose an offer, and decide when it appears. The setup takes a few minutes. The offer, the timing and the follow-up emails decide whether it works.
This guide covers what to offer, how to set up a welcome discount popup step by step, which trigger to use, and how to stay on the right side of email consent rules. For other on-site signals like recent sales and low stock, see our social proof guide for Shopify.
What is an email popup, and why do Shopify stores use one?
An email popup is a form that opens over the page, either as a centered box or a smaller card in a corner. It asks for an email address, sometimes a name or phone number, and gives something back.
Stores use it because most first-time visitors leave without buying. An email address lets you reach them again with a welcome series, a restock note or a sale. A footer sign-up box does the same job, but few visitors scroll down to look for it.
A good email popup has four parts:
- A clear offer, such as 10% off the first order or free shipping.
- One short form: an email field, and only the extra fields you will actually use.
- An easy way out: a visible close button that works on a phone.
- A useful thank-you screen that shows the discount code right away.
Do you need an app for an email popup on Shopify?
Yes, for a popup. Most Shopify themes include a newsletter sign-up section you can place on a page or in the footer, but no theme setting opens it as a timed popup.
You have three common options:
| Option | What you get | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme newsletter section | Inline form, no popup | Stores that want no popups at all |
| Shopify Forms (by Shopify) | Free app with inline and popup forms, can offer discounts (App Store) | Stores that only need a basic sign-up form |
| A popup app with more modules | Email popup plus triggers, page targeting and integrations | Stores that also run sales popups, a promo bar or Klaviyo |
If you already use an app for sales popups or a promo bar, check whether it has an email popup module before you add another app. Fewer apps means fewer scripts on your pages and one place to manage what shows when.
What should you offer in a welcome discount popup?
Offer something your margin can carry on a first order, and say it in one line. Vague offers like “Join our newsletter” give visitors no reason to type.
| Offer | Example headline | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage off | “Get 10% off your first order” | Cuts margin most on large orders |
| Fixed amount with a minimum | “$10 off orders over $60” | Set the minimum above your average order |
| Free shipping | “Free shipping on your first order” | Costs more on heavy or international orders |
| Early access | “Be first to shop new drops” | Only works if you really launch often |
| Content, no discount | “Get our sizing guide by email” | Lower pull, but no margin cost |
Whatever you offer, create it as a real code in Shopify. Shopify lets you set active dates, a total usage limit, one use per customer and a minimum order amount on a discount code (Shopify Help Center). These limits keep one welcome code from spreading on coupon sites and being used forever.
How do you set up an email popup with Sam FOMO?
Here is the full setup with Sam FOMO, our sales popup and social proof app. It is free to install and rated 4.6★ from 17 reviews on the Shopify App Store (Oct 2026). The email popup is a separate module next to the sales notifications.
Step 1: Turn on the app embed
Install the app and turn on its app embed in your theme, so popups can load on your store. The install guide shows each screen.
Step 2: Create the popup and write the offer
Open Popups and click Create popup. On the Content & Design tab, work through each section:
- Template: the layout, for example a split layout with an image on one side.
- Image & Logo: a product photo and your logo.
- Content: the headline, description, form fields and button text. Ask for a name or phone number only if you will use it.
- Appearance: colors and style to match your store.
Step 3: Add the discount code
In the After Submit part of Content, write the thank-you message and turn on the coupon code. You can type your own code or pick one from Shopify Discounts. Shoppers see the code as soon as they sign up.
Switch the preview between Main Popup, After Submit and Floating Button. The floating button is a small launcher that lets visitors reopen the popup after they close it.
Step 4: Choose the trigger, position and pages
On the Triggers & Placement tab:
- Pick the Position: centered, bottom left or bottom right on desktop. On phones the popup is always centered.
- Pick the Trigger condition: After delay, On scroll or On exit intent (desktop only), and set its value.
- Under Targeting, choose the devices and the pages where the popup shows.
Step 5: Send sign-ups where you need them
Every sign-up appears under Popups > Subscribers, where you can export a CSV. You can also sync sign-ups to Shopify Customers, or connect Klaviyo and choose a list so each new subscriber goes straight there. Click Save, then test the popup in a private window. All steps and screenshots are in the email popup guide.
When should an email popup appear?
Give visitors a moment to see what you sell before you ask for anything. Each trigger suits a different situation:
| Trigger | How it works | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| After delay | Opens after a set number of seconds | You want a simple default for all pages |
| On scroll | Opens when the visitor scrolls part of the page | Pages are long, like blog posts or rich product pages |
| On exit intent | Opens when the cursor moves to leave the tab (desktop only) | You don’t want to interrupt browsing at all |
Some practical rules:
- Start with one trigger. Run it for a few weeks, then try another and compare sign-up rates over similar periods.
- Skip the checkout path. A visitor on the cart page is already buying. Exclude the cart page so the popup doesn’t get in the way.
- Space out your popups. If you also run sales popups or a promo bar, don’t let everything fire in the first seconds. Our sales popup setup guide covers timing for notifications.
- Don’t repeat the ask on every page. Someone who closed the popup has given you an answer. A floating button lets them come back on their own.
How do you keep an email popup from hurting mobile shoppers and SEO?
Make it small, easy to close, and never a wall in front of your content. Google’s guidance says intrusive interstitials “obstruct users’ view of the content,” advises “Don’t obscure the entire page with interstitials,” and suggests banners that take up only a small part of the screen instead (Google Search Central).
For a Shopify store, that means:
- Test on a real phone. Check that the close button is easy to tap and the popup doesn’t hide the add to cart button.
- Prefer a delay or scroll trigger on mobile. Exit intent only works on desktop, so mobile visitors need another trigger anyway.
- Keep the form short. One email field is faster to fill on a phone than three.
- Consider a lighter option for some pages. A promo bar or countdown can carry the same discount without covering the page.
What email consent rules apply to popup sign-ups?
The popup is where consent starts, so make it honest. Say what people will get and roughly how often, and don’t hide the sign-up behind a pre-ticked box.
- UK: The ICO says you “must not send marketing emails or texts to individuals without specific consent” (ICO). The EU has similar rules.
- US: CAN-SPAM requires accurate sender details, an honest subject line, your physical postal address and a working opt-out in every marketing email. Opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days (FTC).
If your email tool supports double opt-in, consider it. Each subscriber confirms by email before joining the list. You get fewer sign-ups, but a cleaner list.
How do you know if your email popup is working?
Measure sign-ups first, then what those subscribers do.
- Sign-up rate: new subscribers divided by visitors who saw the popup.
- Code use: check the Sales by discount report in Shopify to see how many orders used the welcome code.
- List quality: watch open rates and unsubscribes on your welcome emails. A big offer can attract people who only want the code.
Change one thing at a time, such as the headline, the offer or the trigger. Compare similar weeks, not a sale week against a quiet one.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- No real offer. “Subscribe to our newsletter” gives visitors nothing to want.
- An unlimited code. Set usage limits in Shopify so the code doesn’t end up on coupon sites.
- Popping up on the cart page. Don’t interrupt someone who is about to pay.
- Fake urgency. “Offer ends in 5 minutes” on a welcome code that never ends misleads shoppers. Our post on FOMO marketing examples covers honest urgency.
- Forgetting the follow-up. Set up a welcome email before the popup goes live, so new subscribers hear from you while they still remember your store.
- Collecting fields you never use. Every extra field costs sign-ups.
An email popup works best as one part of the store experience, next to real signals like recent orders and stock levels. The social proof guide shows how those pieces fit together.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in email popup?
Most Shopify themes include a newsletter sign-up section you can place on a page or in the footer, but not a timed popup. For a popup you install an app. Shopify Forms, made by Shopify, is free and offers popup forms. Third-party apps such as Sam FOMO add popups with discount codes and triggers.
What discount should a welcome popup offer?
Offer what your margin can carry on a first order. A percentage off, a fixed amount off above a minimum order, or free shipping are common. Create the code in Shopify Discounts with a usage limit, so one code is not shared and reused without end.
When should an email popup appear?
Give visitors time to see the store first. A delay of several seconds, a scroll depth on long pages, or exit intent on desktop are all common. Test one trigger at a time and compare sign-up rates over similar periods.
Do I need consent to email people who sign up through a popup?
The popup is the consent step, so make it clear: say what you will send and how often, and do not pre-tick boxes. In the UK, the ICO says you must not send marketing emails to individuals without specific consent. In the US, CAN-SPAM requires an opt-out link and a physical address in every marketing email. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can Sam FOMO send popup sign-ups to Klaviyo?
Yes. Sign-ups are listed under Popups > Subscribers, where you can export them as CSV. You can also sync them to Shopify Customers or connect Klaviyo and send each new subscriber to a Klaviyo list you choose.
