Store credit
Store credit: A balance a customer can spend at your store, offered instead of a cash refund to resolve a claim or return.
Why offer store credit?
It keeps the money in your store and often costs less than a cash refund, since the customer spends it on products at your margin. Some customers prefer it, especially when they want to choose something different.
When should you offer it?
As an option, not the only choice. Offer store credit alongside a reship or refund and let the customer pick, or use it when the original item is out of stock.
How does it work on Shopify?
Shopify supports store credit on customer accounts. Protection apps such as Sam can resolve a claim as “refund by store credit” for the amount you choose.
Example
A damaged mug cannot be replaced because it sold out. The customer takes $30 store credit and orders a different mug the same afternoon.
