Local Pickup Orders and Shipping Protection: Stop the Extra Fee

TL;DR

Local pickup orders should not pay for shipping protection: nothing travels, so there is nothing to protect. On Shopify the fee slips in because protection is added in the cart, before the customer picks a delivery method. Add a checkout rule that stops checkout when pickup and protection are both in the order, refund any fees already charged, and say so in your policy.

Local pickup orders should not pay for shipping protection. The fee covers the trip from your store to the customer, and with pickup there is no trip. On Shopify the fee still slips onto pickup orders, because customers add protection in the cart before they choose how to get the order. The fix is a checkout rule that stops the order until protection is removed.

New to the topic? Start with what shipping protection is.

Should local pickup orders pay for shipping protection?

No. Shipping protection exists for things that go wrong in transit: a lost parcel, a damaged box, a package stolen from a porch. A pickup customer collects the order at your counter and can check it before leaving. None of those risks apply.

Charging the fee anyway causes problems:

  • It looks like a junk fee. The customer paid for something they could not use. That is the kind of charge people screenshot and complain about.
  • It creates support work. Someone has to answer the refund request and process it.
  • It muddies your numbers. Protection revenue from pickup orders is not real revenue. You will refund most of it, and it inflates your attach rate in the meantime.

How does protection end up on Shopify local pickup orders?

It comes down to the order of steps. Most stores offer protection in the cart, next to the subtotal. The customer only picks shipping or local pickup later, on the checkout page.

So a typical path looks like this:

  1. The customer adds a product to the cart.
  2. Protection is switched on, either because the customer turned it on or because your widget pre-selects it.
  3. At checkout, the customer chooses local pickup.
  4. Nothing removes protection, so it is charged with the order.

Pre-selection makes this more common. In Sam, protection can start switched on in the cart on the Standard and Plus plans, and shoppers switch it off if they don’t want it. That is a reasonable default for shipped orders, but a pickup customer may not notice the line item. For the trade-offs, read opt-in vs auto-add shipping protection.

How do you block shipping protection on local pickup orders?

Use a checkout rule. Shopify lets apps add validation rules that run on Shopify’s servers during checkout and can stop an order that breaks a business rule. According to Shopify’s developer documentation, these checks also apply to express checkouts such as Shop Pay, PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Sam Shipping Protection includes a rule for exactly this case. To turn it on:

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout and scroll to Checkout rules.
  2. Click Add rule and choose Shipping protection: block on local pickup.
  3. Enter a title, set the status to Active and click Save.
  4. Place a test order: add a product and protection to the cart, go to checkout and choose local pickup. Checkout should stop with a message.

The full walkthrough with screenshots is in the guide to blocking shipping protection on local pickup orders.

The same list has a second rule, Shipping protection: require another product. It stops anyone from checking out with protection alone in the cart. Turning on both keeps protection attached to orders that actually ship.

What does the customer see at checkout?

When a customer picks local pickup with protection in the cart, checkout shows a message telling them protection is not needed for pickup. It asks them to go back to the cart and remove it. They cannot pay until they do.

Two practical points:

  • The customer removes it, not the rule. The rule blocks the order. It does not take protection out of the cart for them. Make sure your cart widget is easy to find and switch off.
  • The message is short. If you sell to customers who may be confused, add a line near your pickup option or in your pickup FAQ, such as: “Shipping protection only applies to shipped orders. Remove it from your cart if you choose pickup.”

Test the flow on mobile, where the cart drawer and checkout look different. Try it with your real pickup locations, too.

Which delivery methods does the rule cover?

The rule reacts to one delivery method only: local pickup. Everything else still allows protection.

Delivery method chosen at checkoutDoes the parcel travel?Sam rule result
ShippingYes, with a carrierProtection allowed
Local deliveryYes, with your driver or courierProtection allowed
Shipping to a pickup pointYes, to a carrier locationProtection allowed
Local pickupNo, the customer collects itCheckout stops until removed

Pickup points are easy to confuse with local pickup. A carrier pickup point, such as a locker or a partner shop, still involves a shipment that can be lost or damaged. Protection makes sense there.

Local delivery sits in between. Your own driver handles it, so loss rates may be lower, but a box left on a doorstep can still go missing. Decide whether you want to offer protection on it and state that in your policy.

What should you do about pickup orders that already paid the fee?

Refund the fee. The customer paid for protection they could not use, so refunding it is the fair call. In most cases it is also the quickest way to close the ticket.

Because the protection fee is its own line item, you can refund just that line in Shopify admin and leave the rest of the order untouched. Payment processing fees on the original charge are usually not returned, so each refund costs you a little. That is one more reason to block the fee up front.

To find these orders, Sam can add a tag to every order that includes shipping protection. Filter by that tag in Shopify and look for pickup orders among the results. The setting is in Protection Settings > Config under the advanced settings; see order tags and visibility settings.

For the wider rules on when to refund the fee, read refunding the shipping protection fee.

What if a pickup order turns into a shipment?

It happens. For example, a customer cannot make it to the store and asks you to ship the order instead. The order was placed without protection, because the rule blocked it at checkout.

You have a few options:

  • Ship it unprotected. Tell the customer the order was placed as pickup and is not covered by your protection program.
  • Ship it at your own risk. Handle any problem as a normal customer service case, outside your protection program.
  • Ask them to reorder. If they want protection, they can place a new order with shipping and protection, and you cancel the pickup order.

Pick one approach and write it down, so your team answers the same way every time.

What should your policy say about local pickup?

Add one or two lines to your protection policy and your pickup FAQ:

Shipping protection covers orders we ship to you. It is not available on local pickup orders, because you collect the order from us. If protection was charged on a pickup order, contact us and we will refund the fee.

Link the policy next to your protection widget. The claim policy generator builds the rest of the policy, such as filing windows and what counts as lost; add the pickup wording above to it.

Local pickup and shipping protection: checklist

  • Turn on Shipping protection: block on local pickup in Checkout rules.
  • Turn on Shipping protection: require another product as well.
  • Test a pickup order with protection on desktop and mobile.
  • Add a pickup line to your protection policy and pickup FAQ.
  • Refund the fee on any past pickup orders that paid for protection.
  • Decide how you handle pickup orders that end up being shipped.
  • Decide whether you offer protection on local delivery.

If you are still setting protection up, see how to add shipping protection to Shopify checkout. To run your own program with the pickup rule built in, see Sam Shipping Protection.

Frequently asked questions

Should customers pay for shipping protection on local pickup orders?

No. Shipping protection covers the trip from your store to the customer. With local pickup the customer collects the order from you, so there is no shipment to protect and charging the fee is hard to justify.

Why does shipping protection end up on Shopify local pickup orders?

Protection is usually added in the cart, and the customer only chooses between shipping and pickup later, at checkout. If protection is pre-selected or the customer switched it on, it stays in the order unless something removes it.

How do I block shipping protection on local pickup with Sam?

In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout > Checkout rules, click Add rule and choose "Shipping protection: block on local pickup". Give it a title, set it to Active and save. Checkout then stops with a message until the customer removes protection.

Does the rule also block local delivery or pickup points?

No. The rule only reacts to local pickup. Shipping, local delivery and shipping to a carrier pickup point still allow protection, because the parcel still travels.

What if a pickup customer already paid the protection fee?

Refund it. The protection fee is its own line item, so you can refund just that line in Shopify admin and leave the rest of the order as it is.
